Pinus palustris Also known as the Longleaf Pine, a native species to the south eastern United States. The Longleaf Pine is a diverse ecosystem that is also resistant to fire, which makes it a fire climax ecosystem. The current ecological process shown are the photosynthetic process of in taking CO2 and releasing oxygen. The other ecological process is the start if the reproduction system. Since spring has sprung the pine tree has sprouted the male strobili for flowering and start the reproduction between the male strobili and female strobili(pine cone).

The genus Pinus (Pines) has leaves (needles) which have shoots with bunches of 2, 3, or 5 leaves, each bunch enclosed in a sheath of papery bracts. The number of needles helps identification, but occasionally there are bunches with a nonstandard number of leaves, so several shoots need to be examined. Cones are mostly more or less egg-shaped (ovoid) with hard, woody scales.

Leaves of P. contorta are in bunches of two, are dark, or yellowy green, 3-7cm long with a distinct twist; Cone scales have a sharp prickle; the trunk is very straight, with reddish-brown bark , becoming blackish-brown with age.

This species is nearly constant in large numbers at our thistle feeder. I've noted that the presence of large numbers of any mixture of birds and squirrels serve at decoys for many other species... collectively they serve as an "all clear" message. At this time of year, adult Siskins are plentiful. They're even more streaky than the ubiquitous red House Finches from down below (up here in the mountain we see Cassin's Finches). The Siskin males have more vibrant yellow markings than their mates... this one is likely a male.

Whitebark pine is common but patchy in occurrence in this area with much variation in the distribution of age-classes (young, middle-aged, and dead and dying comprise most populations) and no (or at least not much in the way of) signs of disease (e.g., blister rust and animal predation of oozing bark). This site lies just north of Pinchot Pass in the the Lake Marjorie basin, Sierra Nevada, Fresno County, California.
