Uno splendido incontro nel mio giardino (Agosto 2010).
La P. cynthia, detta anche bombice dell'ailanto, è una farfalla notturna di notevoli dimensioni, potendo raggiungere i 15 cm di apertura alare. Ha origine esotica in quanto verso la metà del secolo scorso gli allevatori di bachi da seta, per far fronte alle crescenti richieste del mercato, si misero alla ricerca di un’altra farfalla che potesse produrre seta con il suo bruco. Importarono allora dall’Estremo Oriente la Philosamia cynthia, che si acclimatò abbastanza bene ed è ancora presente nell’Italia settentrionale. Ben presto ci si accorse della mediocre qualità della seta prodotta da questa specie e venne abbandonato il suo allevamento. Rimanne però in Italia, assieme alla farfalla, la pianta ospite (Ailantus altissima) che si è naturalizzata anche nel Parco del Ticino (a scapito purtroppo delle essenze indigene).
Gli adulti di questa specie sfarfallano verso la fine di Giugno o la metà di Luglio e le femmine, subito dopo l’accoppiamento, depongono le uova in gruppi di 15-20 sulla pagina inferiore delle foglie di ailanto. Dopo 15 giorni schiudono i bruchi, nerastri e lunghi solo un paio di millimetri, che poi diventano gialli, spinosi, poi verdastri e si trasformano fino a raggiungere le notevoli dimensioni di 6 cm. Essi si rinchiudono poi in un bozzolo di seta che resisterà sulla pianta fino all’anno successivo (si possono vedere i vistosi bozzoli che pendono dalle piante spoglie in Inverno).

actually cut the stem to get this to lay flat. and pull the petals apart...
still not happy with the results......

I've never been terrific at capturing macro flower shots. I'm usually in too much of a hurry to do anything but hand held, and as I've gotten older, my hands are not quite as steady as they once were. Image stabilization was made for people like me! the wind must have stopped for a second when I grabbed this shot, as it is pretty sharp. I enjoy processing pics like this, because it makes the flower come alive. I think it might be prettier in the capture than it was in reality.
This was taken around the corner from the South Holston Dam.
I'm not sure I like this one, but I figured since I took the time to do the texture, I'd upload anyway :)
