Rio Grande train No. 195 exits a four degree, 40 mph curve through the Jordan Narrows between Mesa and Riverton, Utah the afternoon of July 19, 1988. In the near foreground is the old narrow gauge embankment, constructed in to 1882 and replaced with the current standard gauge alignment in 1889. As many of you know, I have a "thing" for grouse. I find them endlessly entertaining, particularly if they don't notice you. This fellow was after fresh leaves. I can only imagine that it tasted like dessert because Spruce Grouse eat mostly needles from spruce trees.

Another species of bird I've been hearing far more frequently the past few days - these Nashville warblers seem to have really set up shop in my area. I was tracking this bird as he or she was picking grubs off of a branch in a field with lilacs in blooming in the background. Not as sharp as I would like but frankly only got a few frames before poof! Off to the next branch!
