How come I just like to stare at this picture? I can hear notes of Gershwin, Oscar Peterson as well as the first notes of my kids when I look at these piano keys. This is actually a side shot of the keyboard that I use when I'm producing online video piano lessons.
I have to say that the plastic keys ("Ivorine") don't have nearly as much character as the real ivory keys of long ago. Of course I'm not into the destruction of elephants, but ivory sure has a natural beauty to it. I guess that's why the elephants like it too!

Music teachers often face questions like "when should their child start with music lessons".
A recent PBS article suggests that within the first nine years of life, children have a unique “window of opportunity” that makes musical lessons valuable.
But, to be honest, the age of the child for learning any musical instrument is not an issue. Every single child is unique, and there is no formula or time period for the child to start with lessons like piano lessons, guitar lessons, violin lessons. Instead, the individual student should start learning music instrument when they grow curiosity for it and most importantly when they start enjoying music.

Henri Matisse's The Piano Lesson in the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. One of my favorite paintings, but apparently of little interest to most of the other patrons.
