Midsummer is celebrated each year between the 20th and 26th of June, at the lightest point of the year. It is the biggest summer celebration in Finland, and signals the start of "the real summer". It is a celebration of light, summer and a "night less" night.
Many Midsummer traditions from the past are still followed today, one of them the building of the "kokko", a huge bonfire by the water. All over Finland, close to midnight on Midsummer Eve, the bonfires are ceremoniously lit. In Finland bonfires were first made in the eastern parts of the country and from there the tradition quickly spread all over Finland. In the past whole villages would gather together around the bonfire, and strict rules were followed as to how and when the fire was lit. It was usually the oldest man in the village, who received the great honour of lighting the fire.

The Phoenix Rising by the artistic collective Friends of a Feather is a steel sculpture of a Phoenix concealed within a wooden sculpture of a bird. The wooden sculpture will burn, revealing the metal Phoenix within.

Post Processing in Photoshop.
Original Image Size : 20,000x20,000pixels (400 Megapixels)
From now on I can create images up-to 4,000 megapixels (64,000 x 64,000), theoretically I could go even bigger but it becomes very slow editing
such large files on my computer with 'only' 16GB of RAM.

Not much that I can say about this one really, I went down to the coast in the hopes of a sunset, or failing that, a bit of decent light. It looked for a long time like it would be a bit of a washout but I hung on, and the light got nice.
Then I started packing up, thinking "There's cloud on the horizon, I've had it". I stopped, realising that I've caught myself out before packing up too soon, got the camera back on the tripod and POW, this happened.

Phoenix, surrounded by floral patterns, are depicted on this Chinese Malaysian Peranakan/Nyonya style ceramic panel/'painting'
.
Each has a Phoenix depicted at its centre. Traditional Chinese Malaysian Nyonya/Baba ceramics are slightly unusual in that while the Phoenix (associated with femininity) is often depicted, Dragons (the masculinity symbol), seldom appears.

Phoenix.
Phoenix, Arizona. Fond memories of the 1993 NBA finals, I probably watched these games the most (yes, on VHS tape, I must have watched them 20 times each, I almost know them by heart, the tapes are still at my parents’). Here’s a post I have wanted to do for a long time, and a perfect Sunday post. Growing up in small-town Normandy, my geography (and really all of my knowledge) of the United States originally came from… basketball and the NBA. I’ll spare you how starved of images and information we were, but I soon knew well all the cities that had a team, and totally ignored all the others, no matter big or small, east or west. I’ve travelled to most of them since, but flying in space is a good way for me to reconcile actual geography with the NBA map I’ve always had in mind, where San Antonio is just as big as LA, and Chicago bigger than New York City… ;)
