U.S. Department of Agriculture, USDA, Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins joins a trail ride with USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, APHIS, tick riders near La Joya, Texas, on Feb. 9, 2026. The ride showcased USDA’s efforts to prevent cattle fever ticks along the U.S.-Mexico border, a critical measure for safeguarding livestock health and supporting Texas ranchers.
This afternoon Secretary Rollins cut the ribbon of an $8.5 million sterile New World screwworm, NWS, fly dispersal facility in South Texas; part of a sweeping five-pronged plan to enhance USDA’s already robust ability to detect, control, and eliminate this pest. These urgent actions are necessary to finish the fight against NWS and protect the United States.
NWS is a devastating pest that causes serious and often deadly damage to livestock, wildlife, pets, and in rare cases, humans. While NWS has been eradicated from the United States for decades, recent detections in Mexico as far north as Oaxaca and Veracruz, about 700 miles away from the U.S. border, led to the immediate suspension of live cattle, horse, and bison imports through U.S. ports of entry along the southern border on May 11, 2025.
In the event NWS advances northward into the U.S., these tick riders will play a crucial role in spotting and combatting this pest.
Cattle fever ticks (Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) annulatus and R. (B.) microplus) are the most dangerous cattle ectoparasites in the United States. These ticks have been a threat to American agriculture for generations because they spread the disease bovine babesiosis, commonly called cattle fever.

The white mold fungus (Sclerotinia sclerotiorum) can be a very serious and problematic disease of soybeans. This fungus has a wide host range including: alfalfa, beans, canola, clover, peppermint, potato, sunflower and tomato. White mold can also attack certain weeds like amaranth, castor beans, dandelions, lambsquarter, ragweed and velvetleaf. In total there are about 400 different plant species that are susceptible to this disease.

Next day: no sign of damage yet and usually those snails go to work immediately, so this is looking good...

I would have loved to have taken a peek inside this mill, since I imagine there is still some wonderful machinery in there.
It is pretty secure with lots of boarding and steel shutters, padlocks etc.
Fisons owned the chemical plant near to this mill in the late seventies when the government introduced new laws about chemical plants, which included regulating how close residential and other property could be.
Because of this legislation, Fisons were obliged to buy out the neighboring properties with residential housing.
Its a lovely building, so I hope it will come back into use now the site next door has been 'decontaminated'.

There was high security on site whilst the clean up took place, with lots of warnings and huge secure gates.
This was a chemical factory. The whole factory was demolished and the soil 'cleaned'. It is a large site and all that can be seen at the moment is bare earth. It is now destined for housing.

The Former Bayer CropScience site is located along the A10 on the outskirts of Hauxton. Since the 1940s the site was used for the production of agrochemicals including pesticides and herbicides, which over time have contaminated the soil and ground water.
The site was determined as Contaminated Land in 2003 under Part IIa of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and designated a Special Site for regulation by the Environment Agency.
The site had to be remediated since it posed a threat to the Riddy Brook and River Cam.

Firebrats have a broad diet that includes anything high in protein, sugar or starch. Closely related to silverfish, firebrats are able to tolerate higher temperatures and can be found above pizza ovens and in boiler rooms. This insect monitor, placed on the floor of a boiler room, shows several firebrats, with their characteristic carrot shape. Because insects are in the middle of the glue board, it is possible that they have fallen off a structure above, such as overhead steam pipes. It is always important to look up when conducting pest inspections and monitoring.

Sweat bees are tiny pollinators with an affinity for flowers and perspiring skin. They can deliver a brief painful sting if caught under clothing or pressed against the skin (imagine kneeling down and feeling the zing behind your knee!).
