Paper wasps create open comb nests with no envelope. These nests are usually found under overhangs, where they are protected from the elements. Nests are only used for one year, but nest material is persistent. In addition, optimal sites may be used each year.
The European paper wasp (Polistes dominula) is an invasive species that looks similar to yellowjackets. However, it has orange antennae, longer legs and a thinner body.

I would have loved to have taken a peek inside this mill, since I imagine there is still some wonderful machinery in there.
It is pretty secure with lots of boarding and steel shutters, padlocks etc.
Fisons owned the chemical plant near to this mill in the late seventies when the government introduced new laws about chemical plants, which included regulating how close residential and other property could be.
Because of this legislation, Fisons were obliged to buy out the neighboring properties with residential housing.
Its a lovely building, so I hope it will come back into use now the site next door has been 'decontaminated'.

Powderpost beetles vary in size and shape, but are generally reddish brown to black in color, develop as larvae inside of wood and leave ‘shotgun’ holes upon emergence. They have a downward facing head that is hidden from above. Wood moisture content above 10% is favorable for the development of these insects. This powderpost beetle is in the family Anobiidae. A cada postura, uma fêmea pode produzir de 120 a 150 ovos, que levam cerca de 8 a 24h para eclodir de acordo com as condições ambientais. O estágio larval dura cerca de três a quatro dias. Neste período alimentam-se de bactérias e leveduras. A duração do estágio pupal é de três a quatro dias, em altas temperaturas e baixas humidades.
No dia seguinte à cópula, as moscas adultas estão prontas para a desova. Elas localizam o local de postura através dos órgãos olfactivos situados nas antenas, pois o odor liberado pela matéria orgânica em decomposição é atractivo para as moscas.
Os ovos são depositados em locais onde há matéria orgânica em decomposição, como por exemplo: lixo orgânico, esterco fresco, dejectos de animais, esgoto, resíduos vegetais de jardins, gramados e praças, etc.
