This daisy is an introduced perennial that is approximately 1 to 3 feet tall. The nectar & pollen of the flowers attract a variety of insects such as bees, wasps, mosquitoes, flies, beetles, butterflies, skippers and other pollinators.
The tiny crab spider is just sitting on the flower waiting for prey. The spider will ambush bees, wasps, mosquitoes, flies, beetles, butterflies, skippers etc and paralyze its’ prey with a venomous bite then suck them dry. So this is a good little spider to have around for pest control.
Not all insects collected on a drag cloth are ticks. This weevil is about the same size and shape as some ticks, but poses no health risk to humans.
Rodent pathways can be marked if the same path is used extensively. These tails contain sebum, an oily secretion that covers their fur, microdroplets of urine, and feces. The darker the path, the more heavily it is used. While snap traps line the floor in this mechanical room, examination of the evidence shows that rodents stay off the floor by traveling along ridges.

Today I got radical and butchered that darn Honeysuckle bush, tired of looking at the miserable, curled up claws of pitiful blooms. I filled up a whole garbage can with what were supposed to be infested tips only. I am told that Aphids are brought in by ants and once they discovered the bush they will always come back? Also learned that red Honeysuckle are prone to pests and for that reason are no longer sold much? Maybe a Butterfly bush is in the ready?

I would have loved to have taken a peek inside this mill, since I imagine there is still some wonderful machinery in there.
It is pretty secure with lots of boarding and steel shutters, padlocks etc.
Fisons owned the chemical plant near to this mill in the late seventies when the government introduced new laws about chemical plants, which included regulating how close residential and other property could be.
Because of this legislation, Fisons were obliged to buy out the neighboring properties with residential housing.
Its a lovely building, so I hope it will come back into use now the site next door has been 'decontaminated'.

U.S. Department of Agriculture, USDA, Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins joins a trail ride with USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, APHIS, tick riders near La Joya, Texas, on Feb. 9, 2026. The ride showcased USDA’s efforts to prevent cattle fever ticks along the U.S.-Mexico border, a critical measure for safeguarding livestock health and supporting Texas ranchers.
This afternoon Secretary Rollins cut the ribbon of an $8.5 million sterile New World screwworm, NWS, fly dispersal facility in South Texas; part of a sweeping five-pronged plan to enhance USDA’s already robust ability to detect, control, and eliminate this pest. These urgent actions are necessary to finish the fight against NWS and protect the United States.
NWS is a devastating pest that causes serious and often deadly damage to livestock, wildlife, pets, and in rare cases, humans. While NWS has been eradicated from the United States for decades, recent detections in Mexico as far north as Oaxaca and Veracruz, about 700 miles away from the U.S. border, led to the immediate suspension of live cattle, horse, and bison imports through U.S. ports of entry along the southern border on May 11, 2025.
In the event NWS advances northward into the U.S., these tick riders will play a crucial role in spotting and combatting this pest.
Cattle fever ticks (Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) annulatus and R. (B.) microplus) are the most dangerous cattle ectoparasites in the United States. These ticks have been a threat to American agriculture for generations because they spread the disease bovine babesiosis, commonly called cattle fever.

The white mold fungus (Sclerotinia sclerotiorum) can be a very serious and problematic disease of soybeans. This fungus has a wide host range including: alfalfa, beans, canola, clover, peppermint, potato, sunflower and tomato. White mold can also attack certain weeds like amaranth, castor beans, dandelions, lambsquarter, ragweed and velvetleaf. In total there are about 400 different plant species that are susceptible to this disease.

It's NOT a giant mosquito! Just a European crane fly, which is harmless to people. Their larvae live in watery environments and will EAT mosquito larvae, so in some ways these long legged flies are beneficial. European crane flies can be pests of turfgrass.
