Why are there always ants on the peonies, especially before the buds open? Peony plants, like many others, offer extra-floral nectaries, or droplets of sugary nectar outside the flower. This attracts ants, which may in turn protect the developing flower buds from plant-eating insects. Don't bother worrying about the ants, they are doing their job!

Piles of dead carpenter ants were found in a garage. An inspection revealed the presence of house spiders feed on the ants, and a satellite ant colony in a void. Fun morning at our house -- Orkin failed us, by not showing up for our service appointment, and by not responding to our calls wondering what was happening. So we ended up going with locally-owned ABC Termite & Pest Control, who showed up in just one hour. (And also ultimately charged us less than 50% of what Orkin was going to!)
Our problem: Yellow Jackets had built a nest/colony inside the hollow metal clothesline poles in our back yard. First discovered them two nights ago while in the back yard watering our plants and dozens of yellow jackets came pouring out of one of the poles, very angry with me for being nearby. Terrifying experience, by the way.
Anyway, Tom from ABC has now sprayed/treated both poles and in another day or two we can fill the hollow pole ends with a solidifying foam to prevent the nasty little buggers from re-establishing themselves.
P.S.: I officially hate yellow jackets!

Cercospora zeae-maydis is the fungus that causes the disease. Early symptoms are yellow to tan lesions with a faint watery halo. As the lesion progresses it turns brown and rectangular in shape that exist between the distances of the veins. When fully developed the lesion can be 3 to 4 inches long and a 1/6 to 1/8 inch wide. The fungus can overwinter on corn debris left on the soil surface. Spores develop when it starts getting warm and the humidity started to rise in late spring. The spores can be transmitted by both wind and rain. In some cases gray leaf spot can limit yield up to 5 to 40 bushels of corn per acre.
Management of Gray Leaf Spot
1.Select corn hybrid with at least moderate resistance to gray leaf spot.
2.Crop rotation and tillage is an effective method to control the fungus.
3.Fungicides may be needed to prevent significant loss when plants are infected early and environmental conditions favor disease. Since economic return on foliar fungicide investment is still poorly understood, growers who apply fungicide are urged to leave non-sprayed strips in their fields for comparison of yield and disease severity.

Tamsin and I weren't sure why these moles had been impaled on barbed wire, much like traitors used to be so others wouldn't make the same "mistake". And then I log on this morning to find that Tim has posted up a very similar photo, along with an explanation.
