Native, valuable and delicious, blueberries make a great addition to any garden or landscape. Most are relatively disease and pest free. This bush is very productive.

Small mammals such as white-footed mice are an important host to nymphal black-legged ticks. These mammals are also reservoirs of tick-borne disease, including Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, Babesiosis and Anaplasmosis. Therefore, surveys of small mammals can provide informative counts and phenology of ticks in an area. NYS IPM staff was fortunate to meet with scientists from The Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, NY to learn trapping and processing techniques for small rodents.

Along with the use of forceps, blowing on the rodent to move the hair is important for finding attached ticks.

Boxelder bugs are overwintering pests that feed on boxelder trees and seeds. The Toadflax Brocade Moth (Calophasia lunula) is native to Europe but was intentionally introduced to North America in the 1960s in attempt to control yellow toadflax (Linaria vulgaris) and dalmatian toadflax (Linaria genistifolia ssp. dalmatica) in places where these exotic plants are considered noxious weeds.

I saw this caterpillar on a wooden post and watched for over an hour as it built a cocoon by chewing up pieces of wood and placing the chewed wood around itself until it was completely enclosed.

Safer Turf for Safer Schools: Any turfgrass manager will confirm — sometimes the most damaging pests are people. When this school rented space to an outside agency, the school was told 1,000 people would come to the school for exams. Thinking this meant 500 people in the morning, 500 in the afternoon, they knew their parking lot could fit that many cars. But when 1,000 people showed up at once, someone started directing cars onto athletic fields just thawing from a cold winter.

A playfield turned to muck is a magnet for weeds (and technically, weeds are pests). Luckily a local company donated the equipment to renovate the field, because weeds make for slick footing — which in turn makes for sports injuries. Which is why these fields stayed closed until the grass was ship-shape again.Photo: Joellen Lampman

Tick drags with a weighted piece of felt or flannel can be used to monitor for ticks. After walking through an area with the tick drag in direct contact with vegetation, the number, identity and life stage of ticks on the drag cloth are counted. Vacuuming is a low-preparation technique for bed bug management that can reduce the number of bugs present, remove allergens and insect exoskeletons. However, bed bugs can also infest vacuums, and can spread them to different locations where the device is used. To avoid infesting vacuums, you can use a knee-high stocking between the applicator tip and the vacuum hose. Bugs get captured in the stocking, which can then be removed and discarded.

For more information about safe vacuuming for bed bugs management, see page 45 of our guide, "How to Get Bed Bugs Out of Your Belongings" hdl.handle.net/1813/55760

The European hornet (Vespa crabro) is the only true hornet in the northeastern US. It is an introduced species, most commonly seen in forested areas and farmland. The paper nest resembles that of a large yellowjacket nest, but it is usually tan, not gray. European hornets are social, predatory and beneficial, but they will occasionally bang into glass windows at night attracted by lights inside. They resemble cicada killer wasps, which have very different habits.

Possibly the species Tripoxylon politus. Female wasps gather mud and build tubes where eggs are laid in individual chambers and provisioned with food (other insects and spiders). These are not dangerous, but their nests may be unsightly. We recommend that homeowners try to leave the nests alone, as these are beneficial wasps.
