Rodents chew on objects to obtain actual or perceived resources. Rodents might chew on wires because they perceive these as twigs that hold liquid or insect larva for food. The size of teeth marks can help you distinguish between mice (1-2 mm wide) and rats (3-4 mm wide) when comparing pairs of teeth.

Common Wasp (Vespula vulgaris).

Wasp nest in a bird box photographed from above in the studio a couple of days after it was treated by pest control as the wasps were causing a nuisance on school grounds.

The nest contained the queen wasp and many workers including all stages of development from eggs through larvae to adults about to emerge from their papery cells. Some of the larvae were still alive.

These two mice were found in a sticky trap in a school kitchen. The one to the right was still alive upon inspection, but the one in the back had obviously been there for awhile, providing a food source for other pests. Looking to evict mice? So the story continues.. I thought I was catching a mouse, when I found a cockroach in my kitchen! I bought some Trap-a-Roach traps, and the pest control's biologist claimed mice wouldn't stick to them - until this happened, two nights later! So there was a mouse as well, and it was so much stuck to the Roachtrap that I had no clue how to free it without ripping off it's skin or breaking it's bones. I put the mouse to permanent sleep in a gentle way, and felt sad and bad afterwards. I usually set caught mice free in a nearby park.

Thanks to Hoy Hoy for creating such a rodent-unfriendly trap! Somuch for Japanese Technology!

The mile-a-minute weevil was released for biological control of mile-a-minute weed in 2004. The adult insect feeds on leaves producing "shotgun" damage, and females lay eggs in vine terminals. Feeding and oviposition by the insect reduce plant biomass. For more information: canr.udel.edu/biocontrol/mile-a-minute-weed/
