Is it possible that I have fleas or bedbugs?
These two insects can be difficult to tell between, especially given the biting and itching they produce. Let's examine how they compare to help you see the differences.
Habits and Hosts
Although both require a blood host to thrive, bedbugs prefer to feed on humans, whereas fleas prefer to feed on hairy/furry animals like cats and dogs.
Fleas can survive without a host for several months in the pupa stage, but only for two weeks as adults, but Bedbugs can live for up to a year if they are fed.
Fleas can produce up to 300 eggs per week, whereas Bedbugs can only lay up to 200 eggs over the course of a year
Fleas jump from one host to the next, which is where bedbugs crawl.
Bedbugs do not carry any human infections, although fleas are known to spread disease.
But how do they appear?
Bedbugs have a flattened body that is red/brown in colour and ranges in size from 1.5mm to 5mm. They are mainly identified by digested meals in the nooks of your mattress/sofa.
Fleas have an oval-shaped body that is brown/red in colour and runs from 1.5mm to 3.3mm in length. Fleas are commonly found on pets, carpets, and furniture.
Bite Identification
Flea Bites: Flea bites appear as little red spots with a severe itch and are most commonly found on:
Waist
Feet and lower leg
Armpits
Ankles
Elbows
Knees
Folds of Skin
Bedbug bites are small and have a dark red dot in the middle.

Proper handling of garbage can prevent spills that feed pests. Liquids should be poured down the sink or soaked up with an absorbent to avoid spillage, not placed in a garbage bag.
Bagworms make a protective case using materials from their host plant (leaves, bark or pine needles). These bags protect and hide them from predators, allowing them to feed undisturbed on plants.
On average, Norway rats produce 6 to 12 pups per litter (up to 22 recorded) and reproduce 3 to 6 times per year (possibly 12 times under ideal conditions).

Fra og med tirsdag 1. okt. 1946 er der for Trondheim og Strinda innført
sulte- og rengjøringsuker
som absolutt nødvendig innledning til den store felles rottedag som er fastsatt til 16 - 17 okt. 1946 da alle huseiere besørger rottegift lagt ut i sine eiendommer.
Sultne rotter sluker giften! De mette lurer unda!
Derfor må gårdens beboere sette rottene på sultekur flere dager i forveien.
I henhold til lov nr. 1 av 5/7 46 skal der foretas rasjonell roteutryddelse i Trondheim og Strinda 16de og 17de oktober 1946.
Giften skal legges ut av samtlige hus- og grunneiere på de steder hvor rottene holder til - også i de gårder som eieren mener er rottefri da rottene som bekjent stadig er på vandring.
Det er nødvendig at alle legger ut giften samtidig.
Alle hus- og grunneiere er pliktige til å være med.
Før utryddingen finner sted skal det foretas en alminnelig opprydding i kjellere, loft, lyskasser, uthus og liknende. Det skal påsees at næringsmidler ikke er fritt tilgjengelig for rottene, at alle søppelholdere er iorden og at det ikke kastes matrester omkring disse.
Steng rottene ute av huset!
Kjellernedganger, staller, fjøs og binger må ha tettsluttede dører, kjellervinduer forsynes med netting.
Giften er innpakket i porsjoner ferdig til legging.
Det som ikke blir spist av rottene i løpet av 5 dager kostes sammen og kastes i søppelkoppene (ikke i grisematkoppene).
Obs! Hunder og katter tas i forvaring mens giften ligger ute.

Pitfall traps are an extremely useful tool in monitoring for bed bugs. They can be placed under furniture legs, but also along walls, adjacent to and under furniture. Bugs climb up the rough surface on the outside, but are not able to cling to the smooth inner walls. As a result they get trapped in the well. There are several types of pitfall traps, but research has shown that dark-colored ones are more attractive. Sturdier traps should be used under furniture.
