Carpenter ants nesting in a tree in Manchester, MA. This could be dangerous, as the ants are destroying the tree from the inside out, making it very weak. Advantage Pest Controls treats the nesting site directly, and may have saved the tree (and the house that it stands adjacent to).

Safer Turf for Safer Schools: Any turfgrass manager will confirm — sometimes the most damaging pests are people. When this school rented space to an outside agency, the school was told 1,000 people would come to the school for exams. Thinking this meant 500 people in the morning, 500 in the afternoon, they knew their parking lot could fit that many cars. But when 1,000 people showed up at once, someone started directing cars onto athletic fields just thawing from a cold winter.

A playfield turned to muck is a magnet for weeds (and technically, weeds are pests). Luckily a local company donated the equipment to renovate the field, because weeds make for slick footing — which in turn makes for sports injuries. Which is why these fields stayed closed until the grass was ship-shape again.Photo: Joellen Lampman

Dr. Jody Gangloff-Kaufmann speaks at the Spring 2015 Nassau County Bed Bug Task Force about bed bug biology and how we progressed from a society that was bed bug free to one that is overrun with this blood-sucking ectoparasite.

Possibly the species Tripoxylon politus. Female wasps gather mud and build tubes where eggs are laid in individual chambers and provisioned with food (other insects and spiders). These are not dangerous, but their nests may be unsightly. We recommend that homeowners try to leave the nests alone, as these are beneficial wasps.

Bed bugs can hide in tiny cracks and crevices. One inspection tip uses a business card to flush bugs out of these spaces, aided by a flashlight.

The European hornet (Vespa crabro) is the only true hornet in the northeastern US. It is an introduced species, most commonly seen in forested areas and farmland. The paper nest resembles that of a large yellowjacket nest, but it is usually tan, not gray. European hornets are social, predatory and beneficial, but they will occasionally bang into glass windows at night attracted by lights inside. They resemble cicada killer wasps, which have very different habits.
