Arequipa is the colonial-era capital of Peru’s Arequipa Region. Framed by 3 volcanoes, it's filled with baroque buildings constructed from sillar, a white volcanic stone. Its historic center is anchored by the Plaza de Armas, a stately main square flanked on its north by the 17th-century neoclassical Basilica Cathedral, which houses a museum displaying religious objects and artwork.

Peru is a magical destination, abundant with ancient ruins dating back to the Incas.
Peru is the third largest country in South America, after Brazil and Argentina.
After our tour of the Salar De Uyuni, Tom and Lydia headed to Lake Titicaca and I headed for Cusco, Peru. We met up a few days later and slowly ambled our way towards Machu Picchu. Our first stop was Ollantaytambo, a small town of archeological significance in the Sacred Valley. Ollantaytambo was a great place to spend a couple of days, and actually ended up being my favorite town of our trip. Lydia let me borrow her camera for a little while so I went exploring. The terraced land in the background are agricultural terraces created by the Incas.

Stream in Piedra del Toro, Morropon, near Piura in NW Peru.
This village had experienced unusually intense rains between January and March in 2008, which had destroyed low-lying agriculture and infrastructure, and contaminated the drinking water. Here, the civil defence committee, supported by Oxfam's partner CIPCA, is planning to build a dam and a water reservoir to provide water all year round. It is also pumping water along the valley for livestock who would otherwise have a dangerous climb to get it.
Oxfam's partner CIPCA (Centro de Informacion y Promocion del Campesinedo or Farmer's Promotion and Information Centre) supports farming communities in and around the city of Piura in NW Peru. The region experiences intense rainfall and droughts, and local capacity to cope has been inadequate. CIPCA supports communities in seven districts (Morropon, Santa Domingo, Santa Catalina, Chalaco, Pacaipampa, Frias Yamango) through civil defence committees, so that the people are better able to prepare for disasters, and claim essential services such as water, health, and education from national government. It aims to raise awareness of their needs - including water, sanitation, and disaster preparedness - through workshops and training.
