Luxury Andean Explorer train from Puno to Cusco in Peru

The Peruvian Pacific coastal region is a very long, thin desert strip stretching for 1,555 miles or 2,500 km but extending inland for only 12 – 60 miles (20–100 km) before meeting the secondary ridges of the Andes Mountains. Average annual rainfall is only 1.1 in (28 mm) however, due to irrigation systems, Lima and other cities and towns are able to thrive.

Cajamarca - Perú

Cusco, a city in the Peruvian Andes, was once capital of the Inca Empire, and is now known for its archaeological remains and Spanish colonial architecture. Plaza de Armas is the central square in the old city, with arcades, carved wooden balconies and Incan wall ruins.

Machu Picchu stands 2,430 m above sea-level, in the middle of a tropical mountain forest, in an extraordinarily beautiful setting. It was probably the most amazing urban creation of the Inca Empire at its height; its giant walls, terraces and ramps seem as if they have been cut naturally in the continuous rock escarpments. The natural setting, on the eastern slopes of the Andes, encompasses the upper Amazon basin with its rich diversity of flora and fauna.

Wiñaywayna – Machupicchu

On this fourth and last day we get up at 4.00 am to leave Wiñaywayna an hour later and climb to Intipunku, or The Sun Gate. This will take an hour of hiking along a trail of flat stones on the edges of cliffs in highland jungle. From this fabulous spot, we may see the sunrise over the sacred citadel of Machu Picchu. From Intipunku we descend into Machu Picchu, and 40 minutes later we enter the citadel from the highest point through the ¨House of the Guardians¨. We then descend to the control point where we register ourselves and leave our backpacks. We immediately begin a complete guided tour of the Inca citadel that will take approximately two hours. You will then have free time to walk around, climb the Huaynapicchu Mountain, where one can experience spectacular views of all of Machu Picchu, the valleys and mountains that surround it, or visit the Temple of the Moon and the fabulous Inca Bridge. In the afternoon, we meet in the town of Aguas Calientes where, if you like, you can visit and relax in the thermal baths. From here we take the train to the city of Cusco, where we will arrive after nightfall.

Lake Titicaca. Uros islands, Uros people harvesting some totora, an aquatic plant used to make their floating islands.

Titicaca is notable for a population of people who live on the Uros, a group of 44 or so artificial islands made of floating reeds (totora, a reed that abounds in the shallows of the lake). These islands have become a major tourist attraction for Peru, drawing excursions from the lakeside city of Puno. Their original purpose was defensive, and they could be moved if a threat arose. Many of the islands contain watchtowers largely constructed of reeds

Lake Titicaca is a lake in the Andes on the border of Peru and Bolivia. By volume of water, it is also the largest lake in South America.

It is often called the highest navigable lake in the world, although this refers to navigation by large boats, generally considered to mean commercial craft. At least two dozen bodies of water around the world are at higher elevations, but all are much smaller and shallower.

This little Peruvian farm girl was very playful. She was playing a sort of hide & seek with one of my party and I only just managed to get her poking her head through this loom before she ran off to "hide" somewhere else. Because of the rush to take the picture, I didn't quite get the focus right.
