Vicus, like many places in the area, is prone to flooding and landslides, as the nearby river may change its course dramatically when it rains heavily. Oxfam and its partner Centro Ideas is supporting the local civil defence committee to be better prepared for when disaster strikes.

Huanchaco in Peru is the perfect surfing location for backpackers. They share the shoreline with fishermen, seen in the background of the photo, who have been using these narrow, canoe-like, reed boats (called "caballitos" - little horses) to fish for centuries.

School children dancing in Yanque village, Colca canyon, Arequipa region, Peru.

Today we did a day hike from our lodge to a glacier lake below Humantay Mountain. Along the way, we met some Andean priests who played flutes and followed us in sandals. At the top, they performed a ritual of blessings and offerings to the Apu (gods of mother earth).

The Peruvian pelican (Pelecanus thagus) is now rated as a 'near threatened' species and lives off the Pacific coast of South America. These were seen hopefully eyeing up tourists in the Paracas nature reserve.

Took a break from landscapes and Snow mountains. This time in PERU. Streets, Colorful people, 3399meters altitude, less oxygen, llamas, cocoa tea..list continues. People come to Peru to see Machu Picchu. We are going there as well. But this time since I got bored with landscape, thought of spending some time clicking people and colors.

Day 1: Peru - Cusco - Still haven't got our luggage. Its stuck somewhere in Miami. We are roaming around wearing the same dress for the second day. Since llamas smell as bad as us, no one is noticing it. My innerwears are almost near to the Chernobyl radiation level. I hope we will get the luggage tomorrow. Very less people speak English here. We are managing with "Ola" and "Gracias". This is the third day am having sleep less nights. That plus mountain sickness is giving me high. These red colors are getting into my head. We went to Chinchero village in the evening and spend time with a weaving family. They were nice and polite. Cusco is dusty like LEH, but colorful like Morocco. Old streets, Inca ruins, lot of things pending here. Will update details soon.

Day 2. Went to Pisac market which is ~40kms from Cusco. Colorful market. Paradise for shopping.

Day 3: Machu Picchu, an Incan city of sparkling granite precariously perched between 2 towering Andean peaks, is thought by scholars to have been a sacred archaeological center for the nearby Incan capital of Cusco. Built at the peak of the Incan Empire in the mid-1400s, this mountain citadel was later abandoned by the Incas. The site remained unknown except to locals until 1911, when it was rediscovered by archaeologist Hiram Bingham. The site can only be reached by foot, train or helicopter; most visitors visit by train from nearby Cusco.

We enjoyed the mysticism offered by the beautiful Peruvian Andean landscape aboard on the luxury train.

Ollantaytambo is the best-preserved Inca village in Peru. It is located in the Valle Sagrado (Sacred Valley) at an altitude of 2800 meters. But the area was occupied by the Killke culture long before the Inca conquered the area around 1440. During Inca times, perhaps 1000 people lived here. Ollantaytambo also is the site of one of the few battles the Incas won over the Spanish. After Manco Inca had to flee from Cuzco he staged a temporarily successful rebellion against the Spanish from here and beat Hernando Pizarro's troops when they tried to take Ollantaytambo in 1537.

A small crafts market is located at the foot of the ruins, at the edge of the modern town of Ollantaytambo.
