The delightful Victorian style entry doors may be of recent vintage but they are impressive nonetheless. I love the period looking colors on this house.

Lake Titicaca is located on the border of Peru and Bolivia. It sits 3,811 m above sea level, making it the highest commercially navigable lake in the world. By volume of water, it is also the largest lake in South America.

The Uros, an ancient lake civilization who were harassed by the Spanish to near extinction, probably fled to these islands to escape forced labor in Spanish silver mines, though they may have come here earlier to isolate themselves from the Collas or Inca.

Their way of life revolves around the tótora, or reed, which they cut and pile to form giant floating islands that are anchored to the shallow lake bottom.

The true Uros people, whom legends say were protected from cold by their thick, black blood, have long since intermingled with the Aymara, whose language they now speak. Nevertheless, the islanders preserve a way of life that is probably based on Uros traditions. They live in family units governed by a grandfather, and they prearrange marriages—sometimes right after the births of the future bride and groom. They fish, hunt birds, and move about the lake in huge tótora rafts that look almost like Viking ships with their huge dragon heads.

Stream in Piedra del Toro, Morropon, near Piura in NW Peru.

This village had experienced unusually intense rains between January and March in 2008, which had destroyed low-lying agriculture and infrastructure, and contaminated the drinking water. Here, the civil defence committee, supported by Oxfam's partner CIPCA, is planning to build a dam and a water reservoir to provide water all year round. It is also pumping water along the valley for livestock who would otherwise have a dangerous climb to get it.

Oxfam's partner CIPCA (Centro de Informacion y Promocion del Campesinedo or Farmer's Promotion and Information Centre) supports farming communities in and around the city of Piura in NW Peru. The region experiences intense rainfall and droughts, and local capacity to cope has been inadequate. CIPCA supports communities in seven districts (Morropon, Santa Domingo, Santa Catalina, Chalaco, Pacaipampa, Frias Yamango) through civil defence committees, so that the people are better able to prepare for disasters, and claim essential services such as water, health, and education from national government. It aims to raise awareness of their needs - including water, sanitation, and disaster preparedness - through workshops and training.
