Top half of a birthday present box outline

This is a CD cover that I created in response to a personal project. I chose to look at CD covers, but in particular focussing on the music genre Hip-hop and the lifestyle behind the music. I explored graffiti by looking at the work of Banksy, analysed different cd covers, looked at companies that specialized in music album covers and went to an art exhibition called Spin, The art of record design, for inspiration. After taking some photographs and doing some drawings and sketches, I came up with a final design, taking everything I had learned about cd design and the hiphop genre into consideration. This was my final product.

Personal project, Album cover. Photo manipulation building up various different textures, photos, and colour into the design.

I was exploring ways in which a form could be altered in terms of the feeling it expresses. Using forms inspired by the work of Kurt Schwitters, Merzbau, I created little foam board models in which I would make individual. These ones have been dripped with red wax. The blood red gives these angular spiky models almost a gory feel.

Memory Drawing

After looking at maps, I researched artists who use maps in their work. Chris Kenney interested me as he creates constructions from maps and text. From looking at his work I made my own sample using a map of Cambridge.
