So today, I'm posting the first picture in my new photo project called "What is precious?". Its a personal project, that will capture people anonymously holding something that represents something precious to them and is a public statement of what matters to them. The idea is simple but very personal. A pair of hands holding an object that only the person will appreciate and others will wonder about. The idea came from walking in London and seeing padlocks on a bridge which I had seen before in New York and reminded me of two hands clasped together publicly with the initials inscribed but that only those two people understanding what it meant for them. I will be posting more of these photos over the coming months in a set and then publishing them and would welcome comments on this idea.
I shot this image using the on camera flash because I wanted that stark in your face lighting, this and the lines of the wall are leading the eye towards the model which helps her stand out. I also gave the highlights a warm yellow hue and the shadows a cooler blue/purple. The warmer tones in an image tend to be brought forward and cooler tones recede backwards. I used that idea for this image to bring the model further forward in the image.
