Perseverance often pays off in landscape photography. On this particular morning, we had to hike around a mile in the dark. It was snowing and blowing so hard it was difficult to see with our headlights. By the time we reached the rim, visibility couldn't have been more than 5 ft! Everyone in our group thought we weren't going to get anything good. But as it happens so often in the desert Southwest, suddenly the snow stopped, the sun found a small break in the clouds, and it was a complete transformation. These are the moments we live for as landscape photographers!
And still this flower spike grows, and tries to follow the sun. It's developing a pinkish tinge now.

In the confrontation between water and rock, water always wins. Not through strength but through persistence.
This high-resolution still image is part of a video taken by several cameras as NASA’s Perseverance rover touched down on Mars on Feb. 18, 2021. A camera aboard the descent stage captured this shot. A key objective for Perseverance’s mission on Mars is astrobiology, including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will characterize the planet’s geology and past climate, pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet, and be the first mission to collect and cache Martian rock and regolith (broken rock and dust). Subsequent NASA missions, in cooperation with ESA (the European Space Agency), would send spacecraft to Mars to collect these cached samples from the surface and return them to Earth for in-depth analysis. The Mars 2020 mission is part of a larger program that includes missions to the Moon as a way to prepare for human exploration of the Red Planet. JPL, which is managed for NASA by Caltech in Pasadena, California, built and manages operations of the Perseverance and Curiosity rovers.

NASA’s Perseverance rover is well into its second science campaign, collecting rock-core samples from features within an area long considered by scientists to be a top prospect for finding signs of ancient microbial life on Mars. The rover has collected four samples from an ancient river delta in the Red Planet’s Jezero Crater since July 7, bringing the total count of scientifically compelling rock samples to 12.
Twenty-eight miles (45 kilometers) wide, Jezero Crater hosts a delta – an ancient fan-shaped feature that formed about 3.5 billion years ago at the convergence of a Martian river and a lake. Perseverance is currently investigating the delta’s sedimentary rocks, formed when particles of various sizes settled in the once-watery environment. During its first science campaign, the rover explored the crater’s floor, finding igneous rock, which forms deep underground from magma or during volcanic activity at the surface.
In this image, NASA’s Perseverance rover puts its robotic arm to work around a rocky outcrop called “Skinner Ridge” in Mars’ Jezero Crater. Composed of multiple images, this mosaic shows layered sedimentary rocks in the face of a cliff in the delta, as well as one of the locations where the rover abraded a circular patch to analyze a rock’s composition.

Even several days after being cut down and shoved into the yard waste can, with the leaves wilting, this one flower still shines on.
Some years ago a tiny seed carried by the wind settled into a crack in a rock formation, being trapped it made the best of an unfortunate situation. If all goes well, our little tree will crack open it's prison walls. The boulder will give up the struggle and break apart into a pile of stones.
Another weathered old barn.. but with great strength of character which the years have bestowed upon it.

My son wanted to build the landing of the Perseverance rover on Mars, so with a little help from Daddy here we are 😊
The inscription reads: Liberatoribvs Americanis Popvlvs Belgicvs Memor (IV.VII.MCMXLVI) or "The Belgian people remember their American Liberators – 4th July 1946"
The Mardasson Memorial pictured here is located near Bastogne, a municipality in the Belgian province of Luxembourg. It honors the memory of the 76,890 American soldiers who were wounded or killed during the Battle of the Bulge.
On my way back and fourth to Brussels over the past couple years I have many times wanted to exit A4 and head north on A26 toward Bastogne to visit this historical place of 3/4 of a century ago. I finally took the time to do so last week and it was well worth the stop.
Once a tree gets established in a rock its roots will break the rock apart over time. I was trying to think of something philosophical to add but all I could come up with was a quote from Jack Handey,s Deep Thoughts:" If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason."
Ain't no rain gonna make this woman take the day off.

Even though uprooted and dead for years, this tree remains standing. This is as close to giving the finger to adverse life conditions as a tree can get. I am impressed.
To take this image, I had to get up at 130 am and hike for 90 min through a dark forest and across a pebbly beach. This was time spent in awe - I listened to the sounds of the night forest, I saw the sea opening up before me when leaving the forest and climbing down the cliffs and I watched three otters play and hunt.

Statue of the Buddha submerged within the roots of a Bodhi tree at Wat Mahathat (วัดมหาธาตุ พระนครศรีอยุธยา), Ayutthaya, Thailand. The Bodhi tree is a sacred fig tree species, as the Buddha attained enlightenment while sat under the Bodhi tree in 500 BC. Because of the symbolic role in Buddhism, the tree is also called the Tree of Awakening or the Tree of Enlightenment.

Wild flowers are slim pickings in late Autumn in New Zealand.
So I returned to the old faithful performer again. This is the exact White Campion stem I captured on a previous trip, but at a different angle and time of day. See a few posts back.
I had to work fast to capture the last of the sun before it sank below the hill. This time I managed to back light the petals and get some Bokeh too which I am very pleased with.
A couple of minutes later the light was gone.
I remember rising from a kneeling position with a sweat on my brow. Phew!

Shot for Mission 24. The current mission is "Perseverance". Honestly I was stumped when I saw this mission. So I did a quick search on Quotations about Perseverance and I found one from Franklin D. Roosevelt.

I wish I could have seen this thistle plant in flower against this pink wall.
Despite the heat and lack of rain and severe lack of soil,
this plant is thriving, the sight of it gave me hope.
