A apple tree blooming In Late October after it has lost it's leaves.

Yesterday I had woke up about 4:30 am and I was so ready to go just right back to sleep. I always use to have a really hard time waking up, but I reminded myself what I could be missing out on. Boy was I glad I went!

I, also, forgot to mention that when I got there it really seemed like the sun was going to rise behind the gray clouds and I wouldn't really get a great sunrise. I'm glad I waited it out.

per·se·ver·ance [pur-suh-veer-uhns] –noun 1. steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., esp. in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement.

A lone photographer points his long lens hoping to capture shots of Elk along the Madison River in Yellowstone National Park. I guess it's the lot of all photographers that if you want to get the shot you have to be at the right place and at the right time. And not only that, you must be patient and persistent. You never know when the light will change, your subject will move, or something will happen.

A great photo is usually not luck but often comes to those who persevere!

I have been working on this shot for a while now ,i loved the view when i saw it but it was very dark under the bridge and very bright sunshine out in the open with the sun right above us.,i found it very hard to get an even exposure ,it was dark under the bridge and exposed ok outside or ok under the bridge and blown right out in the sunshine....anyhow i rattled a few of and have been playing with them in Elements 14......this is the best i could get ...........the shot was taken looking down stream of the River Avon from under the Seven Meadows road bridge, Stratford-upon-Avon,Warwickshire,England

Should have waited to see what his exit strategy was.

I wanna feel something

I want some good loving

I want some good loving

Want it to mean something

Set this old heart buzzing

Maybe that's where you come in

Maybe that's where you and I begin

[Chorus: SYML, SYML & Charlotte Lawrence]

No, I don't need a heavenly home

Happy Fenced Friday!

My Monday flower greeting comes today from "our" cherry alley, which is currently in full bloom. And this greeting is under the motto "Vision, Perseverance, and Willingness to Compromise."

"Vision" because I immediately knew that this avenue had the potential for great pictures. And that at a time when it still looked dreary and gloomy.

"Perseverance" because I waited two months for this day. Because I kept checking back so I wouldn't miss the right moment.

And last but not least, the willingness to compromise. I had a pretty clear idea of the photo I wanted to take. But for one thing, the sun didn't set where I would have liked (again). That would have been directly in the extension of the avenue. For another, the trees were unfortunately cut back quite heavily, which significantly changed the appearance of the passageway. Since my plan didn't work, I had to improvise a bit. Here you can see the result.

And so I wish you a great week and, beyond that, "vision, perseverance and the ability to compromise (of course only where appropriate).

Christmas is described as a time of peace and joy, but for many, it brings feelings of sadness and abandonment. It is for those that I share this image of a unique tree. For me, it is a symbol of perseverance and hope.

This is an ‘Ohiʻa Lehua tree. It is the most common native endemic tree found in the state of Hawaiʻi, meaning it is found there and nowhere else in the world. Amazingly, it has adapted to grow directly in lava rock. Those who have experienced lava know that its shards are hard and sharp. Nice to look at, lava is inhospitable terrain. But the seeds of the ‘Ohi’a Lehua blow in the wind and settle in cracks in the lava, and find a way to survive, creating beauty along the way..

Hawaiians utilize the hardy tree for building houses, canoes, spears, while the flowers are used in lei and sung about in chant and hula. Flowers are considered sacred to the goddess of lava and volcanic eruptions, Pele.

These trees are home to many native insects and even rare native tree snails! The ʻōhiʻa lehua flowers are an important food source for birds, they sip the nectar from the red blossoms and glean insects in bark and leaves.

There are many versions of a legend about the ʻOhiʻa Lehua tree. One is of a couple who were madly in love- a man named ʻŌhiʻa, and a woman named Lehua. One day the volcano goddess Pele, taking the form of a beautiful woman, saw ʻŌhiʻa and was attracted to him. However ʻŌhiʻa refused Pele because he was in love with Lehua. Pele in her fit and fury, then turned ‘Ōhiʻa into a tree. Lehua, hearing of her lover being gone, asked the gods to turn her into a flower so she could be with him, which they did. To this day, if you pick the lehua blossom from the tree, it is said that it will rain because the two lovers have been separated.

Being in nature is ingrained in our DNA, and we sometimes forget that. Hiking enables me to get away from the distractions of day-to-day life that sometimes can weigh me down. While hiking, I am always inspired by the experience of being lost in a moment of discovery, valuing the simple provisions life has offered and putting my perseverance into test.

The new building of the Court of Law of Amsterdam was opened today and I went to look at the huge statue (5 metres high) in its forecourt. It's a sculpture by Nicole Eisenman (1965-) with the name 'Love or Generosity'. The playful - note his striped pants - giant lad is examining what he's collected in his right - law is right - hand. There's the Owl of wisdom and knowledge, the Arrow of perseverance and focus, and the Acorn of growth and patience.

Curiously, no reference to law's duty to impartially correct injustice and to punish evil... unless I'm missing something.

Baltimore Oriole on a rainy day in East Texas

about 2 weeks before we left, Scotch and I were driving around Thurmont, Maryland by the base of the Catoctin Mountains on a very rainy day when I came across a stream under a small bridge. We followed it up the road and found this perfect place. It's private land that has a sign reading it can be used respectfully and we ended up spending about an hour here until it got too dark and wet. I returned a few days later in the rain again without Scotch and stayed until it got dark. When he's with me and he needs to stay in the car, I never go out of sight. This time, I could explore about a half mile up the stream and only stopped when I ran out of light (and realized I was now somewhere on private property). There was enough solid ground around the pretty fast moving stream to get some very close and interesting angles and the drizzle really made everything shine just a bit more.

It's an amazing place and I had planned to return before we left for California but got too busy with all the preparations, packing and planning. When/If we ever return to Maryland, this will likely be the first place I go.

along a coastal country road, Plett

I try to get out to the Waterville Plateau at least once during the winter and this is why. Snowy owls occasionally stop by.

This is the closest I've ever gotten to one, which is the result of about 10% skill, 10% perseverance, and 80% luck.

I saw this one sitting a few hundred yards away in a field, and before I could even stop to take a distant shot, it flew off. Based on the direction it was flying, I made an estimate on Google maps where I thought it might have gone.

Then I took about a 10 minute drive, crisscrossing my way along the bumpy dirt roads until I reached my destination. It was right where I hoped it would be, and only about 50 (maybe 75) yards off the road.

Tip for cold-weather photography from a vehicle (it was around 33 degrees): You either need to leave the vehicle, or at least turn off the engine. The warmth emanating from the motor and the interior can create some heatwaves that can cause issues with focus.

I stayed in my car (with motor off) and the owl gave me a good 5 minutes to take pictures until it finally got sick of me and flew off.

per·se·vere

/ˌpərsəˈvir/

verb

to persist in a state, enterprise, or undertaking in spite of counterinfluences, opposition, or discouragement

For the past two to three thousand years, this tree has been dug into this mountainside standing virtually alone as most of his brothers are located in a grove a bit further below. Standing bravely at an elevation of nearly 12,000 feet, I would imagine this tree has been buried under dozens of feet of snow, stood against 100 mph winds and endured horrible years of drought. And yet...here it still stood as I came across it last week on a scouting trip through the White Mountains with Greg Boratyn and Eric Gail.

I would say that perseverance is something that all of us need at the moment. We have a pandemic that some are predicting could last until next Spring...or beyond, an election that has people screaming at each other almost non-stop, and protests that have had people marching in almost every major city across our country. If you watch either side of the news for longer than a couple of hours, you really begin to feel like your head will explode.

Which makes it all the more amazing when you head off to the mountains and you come across something that has stood up against everything that nature has thrown at it for literally thousands of years. Suddenly you begin to feel like the end of 2020 is really not that far off. I was just watching an old episode of "The West Wing" tonight and the phrase that jumped out at me was "The things that unite us are far greater than the things that divide us" which, after snooping around, seems to be a quote from the late John F Kennedy. In spite of all evidence to the contrary, I'm hoping that this quote is still true today. And in spite of a pandemic, a contentious election and nightly violent protests...our country and its people will persevere.
