As the sun was setting Friday night just before kickoff of my son's football game, I was able to get this photo of the sunset and the grandstands on the opposite side of the field...I started to fix the lens flare but decided I liked it. Also, if you look really close, just above and to the right of the lens flare is an airplane that I didn't even see until I got home and looked at these on the computer...cool, huh??
Three bracketed photos were taken with a handheld Nikon D5000 and combined with Photomatix Pro to create this HDR image. Additional adjustments were made in Photoshop.

In the spirit of the Olympics, I gotta hand it to this guy's dedication to getting his boat started... unfortunately, it never did.

We recently revamped our family room because the boys are tall enough to climb onto the bench that we had in place to prevent them from touching our flat screen TV. We removed the bench and moved the flat screen TV onto our fireplace. I really like the new layout - I feel like there's so much room now (and the TV stand now acts as a storage unit for their toys which is a huge bonus). We thought we had them beat but they somehow managed to beat us at our own game, as they are now climbing the couches!
I took this photo of the boys today shortly after they climbed our loveseat at the same time. You gotta see them climb. They are literally balancing on their big toe to get up there. I have never seen more perserverance ... they even sat down together and posed for this photo! The moment didn't last long though ... it never does! ;)

This came in second because I wanted to talk about this guitar. This week I am going to begin teaching myself the guitar!
I bought this Guitar at Christmas for £50 and I really think I can teach myself. It is a dream of mine to sing and strum, I want to write songs for my friends and more-than-friends(-if-ever). I want to be a photographer-guitarist extraodinaire and I can't see any reason why I couldn't be just that :)

Thanks to everyone who has asked about Sophie. It is wonderful to know that she has friends around the world thinking of her!! Her condition turned worse on Friday and she spent the holiday weekend at the veterinary's office. Her symptoms remained unchanged through Tuesday morning so the doctors performed an exploratory surgery. Her bladder wall was covered in a gritty plaque and they scraped off what they could of it. Samples and a biopsy were taken to be sent to a pathologist at the University here. At this point they have no idea what is causing the plaque and the resulting irritation. She will be coming home today to await the test results.
This doll was thrown up in this tree over 2 years ago. I first took pictures of it then. I went back a couple of days ago to see if it was still there. It was.

This photo is part of a series called Racing The Planet: The Gobi Desert Marathon (Set).
This is another shot from Day 2: The Ancient Silk Road. Taking photos in a race environment is a compromise. None of my teammates will stop or slow down for me to take a shot, so some planning is required. If I see a photo opportunity, I have to run ahead, position myself and compose the shot, fire the shutter as my teammates pass by, then run to catch-up with my team.
The other compromise is that I'm only allowed to carry a lightweight camera. I carried a Pentax Optio 43WR, a 4 megapixel, lightweight, water-resistant camera that I kept in a pouch attached to the shoulder strap of my backpack.
Taken somewhere in the Gobi Desert, China, with a Pentax Optio 43WR.
After a 5 hr ride round trip to retrieve a stub axle and the tools to replace it, then several hours doing the work, myself and Ian Stewart wound up on the podium with a class win. Just don' give up!!!
Homeless in Long Beach,
I asked him how he was doing,

"Not so good, man, not so good."

'Famine' (1997) was commissioned by Norma Smurfit and presented to the City of Dublin in 1997. The sculpture is a commemorative work dedicated to those Irish people forced to emigrate during the 19th century Irish Famine. The bronze sculptures were designed and crafted by Dublin sculptor Rowan Gillespie and are located on Custom House Quay in Dublin's Docklands. This location is a particularly appropriate and historic as one of the first voyages of the Famine period was on the 'Perserverance' which sailed from Custom House Quay on St. Patrick's Day 1846. Captain William Scott, a native of the Shetland Isles, was a veteran of the Atlantic crossing, gave up his office job in New Brunswick to take the 'Perserverance' out of Dublin. He was 74 years old. The Steerage fare on the ship was £3 and 210 passengers made the historical journey. They landed in New York on the 18th May 1846. All passengers and crew survived the journey. In June 2007, a second series of famine sculptures by Rowan Gillespie, was unveiled by President Mary McAleese on the quayside in Toronto's Ireland Park to remember the arrival of these refugees in Canada.

Inside the Fantastic
Donut Shop on Victory
on an unusually rainswept
day in Southern California,
when I asked her if I could
take her photo, she looked
stunned and amazed at the
proprietor of the establishment,
a small Asian man, who returned her bewilderment
with bewilderment of his
own,
but she consented,
and I told her she had a great
face, and took her photo,
after which she said, "I hope you won't be disappointed."
I assured her I wouldn't.
Sonja was hitchhiking in snow and I gave her a quick ride to mid-town. Sonja works in landscaping and has been in Alaska since 1964. She's going through a rough patch right now but has a warm place to stay at the Rescue Mission. I get the impression from Sonja that she has been through quite a bit in life, but presses on, which I respect greatly. I don't see her on the streets begging for money, only asking for a lift, and getting help at the Resue Mission instead of sleeping on the streets. Here's to Sonja, and finding her purpose in life.

While Dean did an extended hike on the Appalachian Trail, I sat in my comfy chair at a picnic grounds along Skyline Drive doing some knitting. Of course, I never go anywhere without my camera, and when I actually LOOKED at the tree across from me, I realized that the main trunk was nearly dead, but this one branch kept on growing.
