----------

Biennalist is an Art Format by Thierry Geoffroy / Colonel debating with artistic tools on Biennales and other cultural managed events . Often those events promote them selves with thematics and press releases faking their aim . Biennalist take the thematics of the Biennales very seriously , and test their pertinance . Artists have questioned for decade the canvas , the pigment , the museum ... since 1989 we question the Biennales .Often Biennalist converge with Emergency Room providing a burning content that cannot wait ( today before it is too late )

In October 2010 the MoA (Museum of Art Seoul National University) in Korea acquired FF Scala for its permanent collection, the ‘Design and Crafts’ collection. It was the first time the museum made an aquisition of a typeface.

The exhibition ‘MoA Invites 2011’ took place from 19 January 2011 untill 2 February 2011, showing all new aquisitions of last year, including FF Scala. One of the nice things is that the museum actually uses FF Scala in its printed matter: the english text in the catalogue is set in it.

Art Therapy at Winters Veterans Hospital and the Menninger Clinic

Mary Huntoon (Mayme Parsons Hoyt) (1896 – 1970)

Born Mayme Parsons and christened Mary Huntoon Atkinson, Huntoon was a graduate of Topeka High School and Washburn College. She studied in New York at the Art Students League for six years with Joseph Pennell, George Bridgman and Robert Henri. She spent five years in Paris, where she chose Mary Huntoon as her professional name.

She joined the Menninger Foundation in 1934, remaining there through 1948. Huntoon was a pioneer in art therapy, calling those she worked with “students,” not “patients.” Her students’ work won prizes in the Topeka Free Fair. Eighty percent of her patients were discharged after one year. In 1946 she was named Director of the Art Department, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Winter Veterans Hospital.

Art Therapy at Winters Veterans Hospital and the Menninger Clinic

Ruth Faison Shaw was an art therapist at the Menninger Foundation. She sent a young patient to wash his hands with iodine, but found him instead using it to paint on the walls. She realized the connection the hands have to emotions. Shaw would have her patients make fingerpaintings, then use the paintings to talk about their emotions and thoughts while they were making them. Observing that some patients ate the paints, she developed non-toxic water-based paints.

Pewter was used and valued by the Chinese long before it appeared in Europe. Pewter is an alloy of tin and lead. It is soft and can be easily shaped, engraved and stamped. In China, pewter was used for keeping water hot in kettles and serving food, wine and tea. During the 19th century, Yixing clay was added as an interior liner for pewter teapots.

Snuff bottles were used by the Chinese to contain powdered tobacco. Smoking tobacco was originally illegal in China, but the use of snuff was allowed because the Chinese considered snuff to be a remedy for common illnesses such as colds, headaches and stomach disorders.

It was common to offer a pinch of snuff as a way to greet friends and relatives. Snuff bottles soon became an object of beauty and a way to represent status. The highest status went to whoever had the rarest and finest snuff bottle.

Abstraction: Female Form

The goal of abstract art is to communicate the intangible, that which eludes the photograph and normal seeing.

— Curtis Verdun, painter

Artist Unknown

(Abuja, Nigeria, Africa)

Female figure, ca. 1970

Stoneware

Gift of Angelo Garzio, 2001.035.008

People have utilized abstraction throughout time. In order to communicate or express ideas, early artists used symbols and abstracted imagery to create petroglyphs, cave paintings and small portable totems, for example. These three female figures symbolically represent rebirth and fertility from a traditional tribal ceremonial piece to geometric modern interpretation to

contemporary realism. Each piece represents the ideas of the particular artist’s culture and time.

"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland: A Pop-up Adaptation"; Lewis Carroll, Robert Sabuda; Little Simon, New York, 2003. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is Robert Sabuda's most amazing creation ever, featuring stunning pop-ups illustrated in John Tenniel's classic style. The text is faithful to Lewis Carroll's original story, and special effects like a Victorian peep show, multifaceted foil, and tactile elements make this a pop-up to read and admire again and again.

"The Chronicles of Narnia"; C.S. Lewis, Robert Sabuda; Harper Collins Publishers, New York, 2007. C. S. Lewis's classic Narnia books spring to life in the hands of award-winning paper engineer Robert Sabuda. Each of the seven books in the series has its own pop-up spread rendered in spectacular detail with stunning special effects. Experience a different adventure from Narnia on every spread in this beautiful addition to the Narnia library—sure to enchant fans of both C. S. Lewis and Robert Sabuda.

"Horton Hears a Who

Pop-Up!"; Dr. Seuss, David Carter. Random House, Inc., 2008. Unlike other pop-up adaptations that use text abridgments, this book contains the complete text of Horton Hears a Who! David A. Carter has skillfully followed Seuss’s signature pacing by

alternating five big, blow-out pop-ups with 11 booklets, pull tabs galore, and many special effects. In all, ten glorious spreads bring this classic to life in magnificent full color.

"One Red Dot"; David Carter; Little Simon, New York, 2004. Each of the ten magnificent pop-up sculptures challenges readers to find the one red dot. From the flip-flop flaps to the whimsical wiggle-wobble widgets, each page is an original piece of artwork

to cherish and admire.

Claire Cliff was one of the few women of during the 1920s to become a designer in the ceramics industry. She created a line called Bizarre ware. The Bizarre line was full of colorful hand painted abstract designs. The line was very popular and Cliff became one of the leading ceramic designers of her time.

Cliff was once asked “Why is it [the pottery] marked Bizarre?” To which she replied “I called it Bizarre because it is intended to surprise people. There is so much dowdy ware made in the Potteries that I decided to offer brightly colored pieces for the young housewives who I’m sure want something different!” (Griffin, Clarice Cliff: the Art of Bizarre, Pavilion Books Limited, London, 1999, pg.38)
