Along some of the less busy side streets around what was the periphery of Dublin during the Victorian era can be found a housing typology that is uncommon in many other areas of the British Isles: the single-story terraced house. These homes were built for the upwardly mobile working classes who migrated to the cities during the 19th Century to work in the homes and factories of the rich, and were often quite cramped and claustrophobic in their original usage and configuration. However, as the population has continued to become more affluent as a whole, these homes have become more the domain of smaller households, and many have been reconfigured for modern efficient urban living, and offer more ample space to their present occupants than they did in the past. These charming homes are a major part of the urban character of Dublin, and are a unique feature that I believe should be celebrated rather than seen as a piece of the past that should be forgotten and thrown away. Many of these homes also feature doors with knobs in the center of the door, rather than on one side as more commonly seen, a charming feature that is quite common in Ireland.
