Godfathers of hip hop, spoken word legends THE LAST POETS performed and toured the UK for the first time since 2013, as the headlining act on the Apples and Snakes: Speak Up Newcomers Tour.

Grown out of the civil rights movement in the late 60’s The Last Poets are modern day griots, their spoken word albums preceded politically laced R&B projects such as Marvin Gaye's What's Going On and foreshadowed the work of hard-hitting rap groups such as Public Enemy.

"We all thought we were moving towards bringing about something new, something good, for America – not just for black people, but for all people," Umar Bin Hassan.

Critic Jason Ankeny once wrote, "With their politically charged raps, taut rhythms, and dedication to raising African-American consciousness, the Last Poets almost single-handedly laid the groundwork for the emergence of hip-hop."

Speak Up Newcomers Tour 2015 saw these spoken word legends performing alongside emerging UK spoken word talent.

On the tracks - where we shot part of Sync 1 for the POEM project

This is a Poem: SENSE/AntiSENSE

This project is the result of a collaboration between Jason Taellious, Richard Thietje, Jim Hill and Meesh Rheault Miller. This project explores the fusion of a new form of performance poetry and experimental film. Contrapuntal language and synchronicity are layered with added strata of visuals, sound and music. The viewer experiences the intention of the words on multiple levels – a sort of ephemeral sound sculpture and visual alchemy the unexpected result of reinventing media.
