I thought this pine tree was the perfect Christmas tree. After I took the photo I realized it looks the burned tree is growing out of the top of it.

Oudekraal is a lovely spot for a picnic. Located along one of the most spectacular drives in the world, against the backdrop of the Twelve Apostles, with a number of sheltered coves and small sandy beaches between the massive granite boulders, this area is part of the Table Mountain National Park.

Tulips are symbolic of fame and perfect love. The symbolic meanings also change with the color of the tulips.

Red tulips mean "believe me" and are a declaration of true love.

Variegated tulips mean "you have beautiful eyes." Yellow tulips mean "there's sunshine in your smile" and cheerful thoughts. Cream colored tulips mean "I will love you forever." White tulips symbolize heaven, newness and purity. Purple tulips symbolize royalty. Pink tulips mean affection and caring. Orange tulips mean energy, enthusiasm, desire, and passion.

tonight's target practice went fairly well. only this one shot was truly usable, but i only shot four so that's 25% accuracy. as i suspected last night i can comfortably drop to ISO 100 and squeeze better fine detail out of the subject, even in bad overcast light like this. i don't think, at any higher ISOs, that i'd have been able to make out the fine lines of the breast feathers. sharpness still isn't perfect, but i don't think i'd have been able to reasonably do any better in this light. this sparrow was almost the same distance from me as last night's bluebird, and is pretty close to the same size so it's quite an improvement. i made sure i tightened the monopod head and lens' tripod ring more than i usually do to increase stability, and rested the monopod's foot on a beanbag to reduce car vibrations.

the biggest change for tonight, though, was switching away from using AI Servo focusing. it's a godsend for more reasonable focal lengths, but when you're at the extremes of telephoto all it's really doing is rapidly throwing your subject in and out of focus. i was tipped off to this by a bulletin from art morris at birdsasart.com, in which he talks about a function on the higher end canon bodies that prevents the autofocus system from hunting if it can't achieve focus quickly. to try again you release the shutter and half-press it again. to me that didn't sound too drastically different from how One Shot AF mode usually works for me, so i switched to that and i'm happy with the greater reliability.

So last night here in Bardstown Kentucky we got ourselves a heck of a storm. And where was I? Outside photographing it. The rain started pretty early so I had to shoot most from the deck under the awning. I kept running through the house from the front door to the back because it was going down all around us. A couple bolts actually fell pretty close. One in particular was so close that I could see glowing embers from the tree or telephone pole that it hit.

Dwight Schrute's perfect crime.

My wife had these tomatoes still shrink-wrapped sitting on the kitchen counter. The red and green just cried out to be photographed.

But that was no simple thing. No picture in the camera looked like what I saw on the table - faded, dark, bluish... Even when I set my camera for fluorescent light, the colors were better, but still not quite right.

Into the digital darkroom. When I set 100% saturation then I got 99% satisfaction.

The tomatoes? A day or two later they started developing cracks. Instead of nice slices, we had chunks.

Perfect Strangers perform their tribute to Deep Purple at the Boom Boom Club in Sutton

This portrait was shot as part of a brief which stated that I had to generate 20 images of total strangers. All while demonstrating the ability to keep constant control over exposure and composition.
