Sometimes called a reverse rainbow, a circumzenithal arc is created when the sun’s rays are refracted through horizontally oriented ice crystals suspended high in the sky, usually in cirrus clouds. While a rainbow appears opposite the sun, a circumzenithal arc is directly overhead, centered around the sky’s zenith, which is why they often go unnoticed. The colors of a circumzenithal arc are arranged in the same order as in a rainbow, with blue inside the curve of the arc.
