This is caña flecha, a traditional Colombian craft, woven from a type of grass, similar to sugar cane. It's used to make all sorts of things including baskets, hats, bags & jewellery. Dark blue is one of the most common colour used.
In Chiloé Island, Chile, traditional houses are entirely covered in wood tiles, measuring aroung 60x10 cm each (aprox. 24x4"). Originally all tiles were straight, but each owner tried to make his home unique by cutting the tiles in different shapes. Different styles emerged, and when shapes alone were not enough, owners started to combine, arrange and paint to create unique styles. The result is a immense variety of wood tiling.
In this collection I tried to show a selection of wood tilings, and I also tried to create a coding for identifying unique tiles and arrangements.

It's important to take a closer look at the natural world because patters are abundant within it. Nature is beautiful, and patterns help capture this beauty. Pattern are not only pleasing to the eye, but also *interesting,* especially in nature. I saw a few leaves on the ground, and that's where I found inspiration for my project. The leaves I saw were much more scattered than my pattern, however. I guess I wanted to add my own twist to things. It was challenging for me to figure out how to use and manipulate color with Illustrator. Eventually, I realized that making multiple layers helped me get my colors exactly where I wanted them to be. It was easy for me to draw with Illustrator -- the smoothing of lines is an AWESOME feature!
