The sides were made of 3/4" MDX, and the top and bottom was 1/2" particleboard. I didn't really get to decide the quality of the wood, or I would have bought much nicer stuff, and definitely not from Home Depot.
The lighting people at work needed a place to keep their uncut gel sheets and were going to buy a 500 dollar map cabinet thing that was way too big for them. I told them I could build one for 200 dollars... but then they actually made me do it... It's ok, because I got to play New Yankee Workshop and get paid for it. Turns out I rather enjoy carpentry.

Thanks to K. Henkelman for helping with this one.
I built this bench to fit in our garage while still allowing cars to park in it and room to walk. It also needed to allow for a small concrete footer than runs around the base of the garage walls.
It was about 25" deep, 6' wide, and 48" from the ground to the work surface. The entire thing is made from 2x4 pine (with the exception of a few 2x2 furring strips) and the surfaces are 3/4" melamine laminated particleboard.
In total with tax the project cost $93.39:
11 - 2x4x8 Pine @ $2.82/each
3 - 2x2x8 Pine @ $1.75/each
1 - 8x4 Melamine Particle Board @ $38.28/sheet

The cabinets are solid wood—not a bit of particleboard in the kitchen—and the hardware is very simple. There is nice lighting under the upper cabinets. The blinds are custom (not very expensive, but Home Depot cut them to measure, and I removed the bottom 14 slats myself).
The photo was taken in the 1700 block of Chestnut St in Harrisburg PA. This is under the wooden back-staircase climbing the wall of a rundown building, the steep rise eased by two landings, allowing a bit of respite for those who might wish to get up to the door high in the building's rear.
No one uses these stairs anymore, though.
The staircase has a large sheet of weathered particleboard blocking anyone from ascending more than the first couple of steps.
And for good reason.
Beyond the barrier, the old staircase has lost its functional integrity; a long section of stairs has partly come loose from the rest, and from its moorings. It is hanging canted... askew from the portions of still-secure steps that now lack a real purpose...
Or rather, that now lack the originally-intended purpose.
They still do serve some purpose...
