Part 2

That night I awoke at 2 am. (Back in 2016 during my 40 day journey on the Sierra High Route I came across a little tarn that I thought was really beautiful flic.kr/p/XJvwTq that I wanted to photograph at sunrise but I was there during the wrong time of day, so I added it to my return to list. Today I planned on returning to it, so like I said I wanted it at sunrise so I woke up at 2 am, because it was 3 miles away over a cross country pass that was 820 ft higher than where I was camping.) I put my camera gear and breakfast into my backpack and left everything else in my tent. The sky was moonless and scattered with stars. The air was alive and restless as a strong wind blew through the lake basin. I began to follow the trail that circumnavigated the lake, but in the devouring darkness I soon lost it. I continued on into the starry night guided only by the small circle of light cast by my headlamp.

The formless landscape twisted into strange shapes and dark trees walked beside me swaying in the cold relentless wind. To my left lay the lake, it's waters stretching into an endless black void glittering with reflected starlight. Soon I began to hear, between gusts of wind, the distant sound of water cascading over rocks. As I got closer it got louder and amongst the babbling of the creek the water also sounded like faint drum beats. “Drums, drums in the deep”. I crossed the creek and continued around the far end of Garnet Lake heading to the sloping meadow lands.

All this time the wind blew strong, pulling on my beard and tugging at my clothes. When I reached the meadow lands the landscaped opened and the trees followed me no more. On the other side of the meadows the grass became talus and now I had to climb White Bark Pass, a cross country pass that I did back in 2016 going the the other way during the day. Before trying to navigate my way up the steep pass I took a break and turned my headlamp off. The darkness thickened without the light to hold it back and the stars glimmered overhead, the milky way arcing high reaching from horizon to horizon. Turning my light back on I began to look for the route up the pass. I soon realized I had gone too far west because tall cliffs rose to my south so I retraced my steps until a faint trail appeared in front of me. The pass was easy but finding a safe route up with just my headlamp was challenging. At times the trail vanished only to reappear on top of a ledge that required hands and feet to climb.

There was no relief from the cold wind while I climbed the talus covered mountainside. As soon as I reached the top of the pass the largest gust yet was already there to greet me, trying to push me back down to the meadow from where I had come. I quickly made my way down the other side seeking shelter from the relentless wind. Then appearing as apparitions out of the inky darkness a few crooked pine trees stood against the wind. I quickly made my way over to the closest one and huddled beneath it’s sheltering branches and for the few moments I lied there I was protected and warm while the wind still howled through it's boughs. After a few minutes I ventured back out into the cold wind.

As I made my way by the small circle of light cast by my headlamp the ground ahead of me fell away into a deep, dark abyss, as though a chasm had opened leading deep down into the roots of the mountains to where the drums had sounded. “Drums, drums in the deep.” The landscape on this side of the pass was formed by rolling hills, each hill falling away further and deeper then the last and as I descended down and down the black formless void fell before me keeping it's distance as though it was afraid of my light. Soon I heard distant, rushing water competing with the sound of the wind, and I knew I was close to my destination.

After one final descent I reached a sheltered cirque free from the wind that had been chasing me. After a few more steps I reached a still pond reflecting my light back into my eyes. I followed it's rocky shore downstream and found a spot to stop, here I waited for the dawn. Soon the sky began to lighten and I could see a haze clinging to the high peaks of Banner and Ritter that towered over this small pond. I hoped it wasn't smoke. As the sky grew lighter and lighter and the stars began to fade I could see more and more of my surroundings and I saw that the highest reaches of the two peaks were shroud in thick clouds, not smoke. Soon I was able to see enough that I was now able to start looking for good compositions.

Once all the stars faded and the pale sky was all aglow a bright pink light cast itself upon the high peaks, and a photo that I have wanted to take for the last 5 years finally happened.

Part 5

The next morning arrived and I slept in a little. Then after waking at sun touch I packed up and headed down the trail to the lake I saw from above the day before, 4th Recess Lake. It was a short hike, only about 2 miles and mostly downhill with no major uphill.

The shores of this lake were surrounded by pine forest on the northern end where the log jammed outflow creek drained into Mono Canyon, it was beneath these shade giving trees that I made my camp. The 650ft waterfall at the far southern end 0.6 mile away, filled the air with its peaceful drone. After a short break and nap, I explored the western shore where the forest broke into steep sloping meadows and swiftly rising mountainside until I could go no further. By now clouds gathered above the towering cliffs on the eastern shore and wind whipped across the surface creating small whitecaps that sloshed against the rocky western shore beneath my feet.

As the hours went by, and the sun continued it's long trek across the sky, the roaring wind calmed its temper and all became still. As the sun neared its resting place beyond the high peaks 100s of fish began jumping in the lake's now still surface beneath the vibrant alpine glow on the towering cliffs above the eastern shore. Then came the calm night spent listening to the faint distant roar of the waterfall.

While exploring this lake I struggled with photographing the large landscape photos I love the most, so I focused more on the small details of the rocks, light/shadow play, water and trees. There was one spot in particular on the eastern shore beneath the towering cliffs that caught my attention; a large, sweeping steep slope of large talus boulders that looked as though it was created in a massive rock slide that may have been the cause of the log jam at the outflow of this lake.

There is a little pond of glacial melt water that I have been looking at on google earth for several years now. It lies at the foot of Banner Glacier, in amongst the glacial moraine. To reach it I would have to climb 1250 ft in 0.8 of a mile. My goal was to do what I had done for yesterday's sunrise photo and wake up stupid early to climb up there for alpine glow, but since I have not been there before like I had for the other shot I needed to do an exploratory climb first just to see if it was possible to reach. Before leaving I had spent long hours studying satellite imagery, topo-maps and mountaineering routes, trying to determine the best possible way up to it. Now that I was finally here and able to see it with my own eyes I studied the landscape and terrain that I could see from a distance to try and confirm my planed route. I thought I had found a route that I liked that avoided as much talus and moraine as it could.

Today my plan was simple, make sure the route was climbable and that it could be done by headlamp also maybe find a site to spend the night somewhere closer, higher up the slope if I can near a spring, that would be a huge bonus.

After a successful 0.8 of a mile, 1250ft climb over 4 hours to the tarn I determined it would have been to dangerous to make the climb buy headlamp and I also did not want to do it again with a pack on. Now all I had to do was retrace my steps back down...

ENG The portal of Santa María La Real de Sangüesa (Navarra, Spain) is one of the most outstanding works of Spanish Romanesque art. Sculpted at the end of the 12th century. The statues-columns that support the three archivolts are one of the most beautiful elements of the portal, those on the left represent the Three Marys who symbolize the resurrection and those on the right Saint Peter, Saint Paul and Judas. The lower part of the cover is the work of the master Leodegarius.

The Ecotron is part of the Field Research Centre , located in the Hoge Kempen National Park. The Ecotron of Hasselt University is a large-scale research infrastructure that enables state-of-the-art controlled climate experiments to study the effects of climate and climate change on ecosystem functioning. It provides insight into the impact of climate on a given ecosystem that cannot be obtained through field experiments (too complex) or controlled laboratory experiments (too reductive).

The Ecotron of Hasselt University consists of 12 closed, sunlit units, where environmental conditions can be controlled separately. Each unit houses a lysimeter with a 3.14 m2 and 1.5 m deep soil-canopy column, where ecosystem processes can be monitored in real time.

The following variables can be monitored: air temperature, air relative humidity, air CO2 concentration, precipitation, soil water tension and soil temperature.

The following variables are monitored every 1 to 30 min: CH4 and N2O concentrations in air, atmospheric pressure, net radiation, photosynthetically active radiation, soil electrical conductivity, soil water content, soil weight and soil leachate weight.

All soil parameters are measured at 15 positions: 5 depths (10, 20, 35, 60, 140 cm) and at 3 spatial positions per depth.

In addition, suction cups sample soil water at the same 15 positions per unit.

From these variables, net ecosystem exchanges, evapotranspiration, and CH4 or N2O emissions can be calculated with high resolution and frequency.

LA COMMEDIA DELL' ARTE 2a parte

_______________________________________________

Subito inteneriscono i turisti.

Qualche bimbo ha meno di 10 anni.

Ho in mano la fotocamera con inserito l'obiettivo 300 mm.

Così facendo, riesco a vedere meglio quel che accade.

Li seguo ,

E' una guerra all'ultimo respiro.

Seconda scena:

E' il momento di tornare a riva,

dove ragazzi più grandi li aspettano a mani tese.

No miei cari amici, non vogliono aiutare i bimbi,

Fingono litigi e piccole truffe.

Mimano l'alt a tutti i contendenti.
