Despite direct access to the Pacific Ocean, Portland is probably best understood as a river port city, much like those in the Midwest, with access to a vast agricultural hinterland. But what separates Portland is our geography and natural resources. The city was carved out of a uniquely beautiful rain forest, whose terrain and lush foliage have dominated its image and directly fueled its endeavors.
In the 19th century, Portland became a major center for agricultural and industrial trade. Here, ocean-going vessels could find a riverbank adjacent to safe moorings and a wide stream for turning around. Portland emerged from the land swaps of local speculators to become a marketing center. Portland’s merchants between 1850 and 1880 grew wealthy on a smaller scale by functioning as wholesale distributors throughout the northwest region for imported manufactured goods, and by becoming marketing agents by extending credit to farmers.
Other than a brief wartime boom in the 1940s, Portland has never had a sufficiently large regional market to develop heavy industry. We have remained a mid-sized commercial city rather than industrial metropolis, and the physical growth of the city has continued to be shaped by non-industrial forces.
According to the Freelancers’ Union recent poll, 1 in 3 American workers is an independent contractor. In the city of Portland, 8.3% of the population is self-employed, (4th nationwide, compared to 10.1% in LA, 9% SF); and within the creative class specifically, 11.2% is self-employed, (again behind LA with 13.2% and SF with 11.6%). Of course, this doesn’t include the hordes of makers – fashion designers, brewers, woodworkers, farmers, potters, jewelers, and tech-savvy entrepreneurs – who run businesses and design firms in addition to holding full or part-time jobs. Indeed, Portland is a veritable haven for the creative and self-directed.

The pre sunrise was much more dramatic than the main event, and I missed it. So this is as close as I got this morning. Very productive day, finished Ollies shoot and was doing the photographic equivalent of the 'happy dance' - dead chuffed with the end results. Almost forgot about a job that I had pencilled in for this afternoon but managed it....just! They do say you should never work with animals and small children - there were about 30 under 6's - quickly in and out.
I have to get a part time job, I hate having no financial independance and really REALLY having to count pennies. Yes, I have photographic work but payment isn't actually there and then, so a steady wage is a must...anyone want an aging cameraholic on their books?

High school students from throughout the state participate in Jump Start, a three week career development program for students who are blind or severely visually impaired. The program is sponsored by the Department of Human Services Division of Services for the Blind (DSB) and the Arkansas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ASBVI). DSB placed students in part-time jobs in the mornings and paid them minimum wage. Students participated in educational and recreational activities in the afternoons and evenings. Students stayed during the week on campus at ASBVI. The program is designed to assist students in transitioning from high school to employment or post-secondary education and increase their confidence in social situations.
