The Paramount Theatre, located in downtown Austin, Texas, opened in 1915 as a vaudeville house, becoming a movie theater during the 1920s. It was restored in the 1970s and now offers live performances as well as films. The marquee had included a vertical blade sign until the 1960s, and in honor of the theater's 100th anniversary, the blade in this shot was installed last year. Information from the theater's website.

The Paramount Ballroom, also known as Paramount Theatre (Chinese 百樂門 Bǎilèmén) is a prime example of preserved Art Deco architecture in Shanghai. The Chinese name means roughly "Gate to 100 Pleasures"...

It was completed in 1933, designed by the Chinese architect Yang Xiliu. It lay just off Bubbling Well Road (now Nanjing West Road) and was a meeting place for the wealthy elite of the Shanghai society - and also the elite of Shanghai's underworld. The most famous of old Shanghai's late night hangouts with music into the morning and drinks flowing freely.

The Ballroom lasted under its original owners before going bankrupt in 1936. In 1937 it was converted into a taxi dance hall featuring Chinese dance hostesses, which it remained until 1949.

Closed at the revolution, it was re-opened in 1956 as "Red Capitol Cinema" featuring the usual propanda movies. Again closed in the Cultural Revolution it became defunct and dilapidated.

In 2001 it was restored by Taiwanese investors and re-opened as ballroom. Due to lack of revenue some floors were converted into a disco in 2006 and only the forth floor ballroom remains in original style.

this sign is irresistible, and i'm sure it's been photographed a thousand times, often much better. what i like about it is that it even catches your eye during the daytime, and on a dreary morning like this was, the paramount sign's colors can put a little pep in your step

"The Paramount was completed in 1932 just as the Depression was leaving its mark on Amarillo, which had feasted on the fruits of the 1920s oil boom until the global crash caught up with it.

The Paramount was Amarillo's premier first-run movie theater for decades, but fell behind the multiple screen suburban complexes in the 1970s, and closed in the mid 1970s.

It was gutted and converted to office space, but the pueblo deco exterior is still as beautiful as ever. A hint of its grandeur can be seen in the second level of the parking garage that fills the old auditorium. The painted starburst ceiling is still intact, as is golden plasterwork that framed the top of the stage. The original chandelier and the giant blade sign from the facade have been preserved in a now-closed disco in the city's warehouse district.

A movement is under way to restore the sign and place it back in its original location".

Taken in 2016.

The "2015" data is wrong.

The Paramount was once a 1700-seat movie theater on Washington Street downtown. (I went to more than a few movies there before it closed in 1976). Now it's a performing arts center for Emerson College.
