A streetlight is fitted with two kinds of fixture, utilitarian and ornamental. Two horizontal rods were intended to support a marketing banner. Were such a banner in place, it might read something like "Shop, dine, live, play: Downtown Asheville."

Satellite dishes were upraised cheering pompoms, or perked-up ears. I felt welcomed.

Downstairs was '60s-'70s tan stone veneer. Upstairs was clay brick in brown paint. A wood shingle awning obscured the boundary between the stone veneer and the painted bricks. A neoclassical cornice spanned the top. Out front was parked a 2023 Jeep Compass. It all combined to handsome and comfortable effect.

The building appears on an 1893 Sanborn fire insurance map, so it's at least that old.

This creation combines gables with a mansard. There is a date stone above the door: "Joseph C. Del Grosso, circa-1981, 2524 Pine Ave."

The building's record in the Niagara County Property Record Online System says the building was completed in 1982. Based on my experience with some fishy records in this database, that could be true, or 1982 could be the year that the building last underwent a major remodel or expansion. For example, the record describes the building as two one-story buildings, each occupying an area of identical size. Maybe what actually happened in 1982 is an older building was given a new façade and a new second story?

Anyway, "Nineteen hundred eighty two, a gable roof with mansard. Paint its wooden shingles pink and all your prayers are answered."
