In a forgotten Papermill in Germany

Similar conditions today as 2019 misty start then the sun burns through. Today would have been my first visit here in about two years, except the road was closed, unfortunate as we haven't seen any sunshine for about two weeks now.

Decided to take the dog for a long walk instead - so he was happy!

I hope we have a colourful autumn this year. One from a couple of years ago at The Knapp & Papermill nature reserve in Worcestershire.

There is one solitary spot up above this 4-part waterfall where you can see most of the parts. Pictures taken from there will never look too great because of the outgrowing branches. They'll be even worse as all the little leaves on the bushes fill out.

But just to stand there and look down on a unique waterfall is absolutely glorious!

Papermill Cottage sits in a natural amphitheatre, surrounded

By hill and woods. The West highland cattle keep the toughest

Grass down and fertilize the meadow.

This is a place of solitude..."where the Raven and Buzzards glide"

Even better on black.

This blossom cheers up a bright winter's morning at The Knapp & Papermill nature reserve.

I took this one a couple of years ago before it all got fenced off.

This brook runs through The Knapp & Papermill nature reserve, which needed protecting from all the walkers trampling the banks cousing damage. This will give wildlife a chance to regenerate. I do volunteer work for the trust - survey and photography and of course my boots are capable of doing as much damage as anyone else.

A lumber mill, and later a pulp mill operated on the Scott Paper Mill Site beginning in the late 1800s through the late 1970s. The pulp mill used waste from the lumber mill and discharged waste water directly to Fidalgo Bay. Metals, diesel- and motor oil-range petroleum hydrocarbons, carcinogenic polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (cPAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and dioxins/furans have been found in soil at the Site above Washington State cleanup levels. Many of these contaminants were also found in groundwater (low levels) and marine sediments. In 1999, the Port of Anacortes and Sun Healthcare Systems conducted an independent cleanup action to remove petroleum-contaminated soil and wood debris on one of the parcels within the Site. Portions of the property have been operated recently by multiple entities that have used the Site as a log yard, a staging area for oil field equipment, a boat manufacturing site, storage, and a modular home assembly area. The northern portion of the Site is now primarily Seafarers’ Memorial Park, and the southern portion is primarily vacant. For nearly 100 years, mill operations dominated the Anacortes waterfront along Fidalgo Bay. First a sawmill started up, followed later by a pulp mill. But by 1978, Scott Paper had closed both mills. The property was used for other industrial purposes in following years. The mills left behind widespread contamination from their operations, ranging from wood waste to industrial chemicals. The Washington Department of Ecology, acting under Gov. Chris Gregoire’s Puget Sound Initiative, worked with the Port of Anacortes and Kimberly-Clark (which had purchased Scott Paper) to clean up the contamination and restore the area’s environment. Now the former mill site features a beautiful waterfront park, which provides unprecedented public access to the shores of Fidalgo Bay. And it shows how the public and private sectors can work together to protect the environment and provide benefits to the local community.

A view of the Papermill early in the morning as the sun was coming up.

Papermill Cottage in a meadow within a wooded habitat. All main roads are miles away, in fact there isn't a road to this Old cottage.

It was last lived in back in the sixties, it's an incredibly peaceful place to spend some time, no traffic noise, just the bees & the birds for company. I would love to live here, take photos, sketch and watercolour and write a bit of poetry. A few years ago I sold a photograph on canvas to a former resident who lived here back in the sixties and she told me about her childhood days spent here. I would like to imagine that photograph taking pride of place on the living room wall, with every passing glance evoking memories of her childhood.

The Watercanal from the Papermill. I can not leave to photograph of these fascinating view of the Watercanal there. It remains for me one of the best views. In the left part of the image is equal to the PM6. The right is the old Power Plant for the steam and power production. And below is the Pipe Passerelle. The Pipe Passerelle coming soon. I hope you enjoy it and wish you a Good Night...

On mass they contrast well with the Birds-foot Trefoil in Papermill meadow at The Knapp & Papermill nature reserve in rural Worcestershire.

Leigh Brook running through The Knapp & Papermill nature reserve. I've spent many happy hours at this beautiful reserve.

The Knapp & Papermill nature reserve is awash with Wood Anemones at the moment.

Deep in the Worcestershire countryside is a place of solitude that I like to spend some time just listening and observing.

This is Papermill meadow, surrounded my miles of wooded hills at The Knapp & Papermill nature reserve.

A recent UK colonist, the Willow Emerald Damselfly (Chalcolestes viridis) was first recorded in East Anglia in 2007. It can be found in south-east Suffolk, south-east Norfolk, Essex and Kent. This specimen was seen in Suffolk Wildlife Trust's Papermill Reedbed Nature Reserve.

It spends much of its time in the trees, laying its eggs into the bark of willow or alder. It can be found near ponds, canals and other still waterbodies that have overhanging trees. The eggs are laid into the bark of willow or alder.
