Although first impressions of the town are generally unfavourable, Pakbeng is actually a very interesting place. Once extremely poor, it is now growing rapidly, with even a few big mansions going up. The town’s change of fortune is due to its role as an important trading post; goods from Thailand come down the river from Houayxai and then make their way up into the interior from here.
Tourism has also been a big boon for the town, with the slow boats alone disgorging up hundreds of hungry backpackers a day.

This fruit&veg Market is the heart-beat of Bangkok fresh food markets - open very early in the morning (possibly open all night). It keeps all the porters very busy!
The other big market is at Khlong Toei.
The Pak-Ou Caves are located 25 km north of Luang Prabang, Laos, overlooking the Mekong river.
The Pak-Ou Caves are one of the most respected holy sites in Laos. They have a long history as a shrine to the river spirit and Lord Buddha. Packed with over 4,000 mostly wooden Buddha statues, the caves are cut in a limestone cliff at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Ou rivers. There are two caves to be visited, the lower cave called Tham Ting and the upper cave Tham Theung.
Visitors usually travel by boat on the Mekong river from Luang Prabang to the caves. There is no road access.
