There were plenty of long faces as three of GMP’s oldest horses retired yesterday (Thursday, 25 May 2016).

There wasn’t a dry eye at Hough End’s mounted unit as officers said goodbye to their four-legged partners Pip, Countess and Harvey.

Pip - a 16.2 hands-high piebald - galloped into a career with the force in 2005 and has stood his ground at everything from Manchester United home comings to parades, protest marches and riots.

Originally from Lancashire, Pip has taken his time with the force in his stride and has won over Constable Kate Guest in the process.

At the grand old age of 18, he is now due a very well deserved break where he will join Countess and Harvey in putting his hooves up in a grazing field in Goostrey, Cheshire, before eventually going to the Horses Trust in Buckinghamshire.

Countess – a 20-year-old dark bay mare – saddled up for life with GMP in 2004 at just eight years old after coming from Staffordshire. In the past year she has worked with constable Karen Danks.

Last of the trio to trot off into retirement was Harvey – a 19–year-old bright bay from Humberside constabulary who joined Pip and Countess at events across Greater Manchester with the assistance of Constable Aaron Wilson.

All of GMP’s horses are trialled for a number of weeks before they begin a rigorous training process which prepares them for life on the beat. This includes being taken out on the roads and attending smaller events to get used to crowds and traffic before policing large-scale operations.

PC Kate Guest, from GMP’s Mounted Unit, said: “All of our horses have been a huge asset to the mounted unit and their work and bravery is crucial in helping us best protect the public.

“They each have their own personality and characteristics and no two horses are ever the same.

“Pip has been the rock of the unit for so many years and he will always be my favourite. He is nicknamed the stone wall because he is not scared of anything and although I have only been in the team for a year, he has been with me since the start. He has taught me everything I know about being a mounted officer and he has always made me feel safe, no matter what the situation.

“He is the granddad of the group and can be like a grumpy old man, but once he gets to know you he is so soft and sweet and loves being scratched behind the ears. He is a one off and I won’t forget him or the work he has done during his time at GMP.”

I took my newest Dal, Pip (Pippa), out into the garden after work today for her very first photo shoot in her new wig. It was already getting dark when I got home, but I couldn't resist posting these pictures up! I ADORE her already!!

Lucky shot, he dashed off 0.5 seconds later :)

Little Owl "Pip" poses under a branch at Feathers & Fur, Hare Hatch, Berkshire

Spending the week at my parents, Pip and three others dolls came along. Time to do some nice photoshoots of my girls.

I just noticed that so far all of Pip's 52 weeks shots have been headshots, so it's definitely time for a full body shot. Pip and Layla were running around in a friend's pasture -- I tried taking some action shots, but with Pip he tends to run straight at me and my camera's autofocus has trouble tracking him. Thankfully he did stand still for about a nanosecond before my fingers froze (it was about 30 degrees out -- seemed really warm compared to the sub-zero days we had earlier in the week, so I stupidly went out without hat/scarf/gloves).

Our new kitten Pippa, 9 weeks old.

Thanks for the comments and faves, they make me smile. :)

Ahh, how lovely is this little chap? The light was perfect this evening, and this tiny coaltit kept making a run for the peanut feeder, stopping at the same branch each time to clean his beak. Bit of a heavy crop on this, with it being such a small bird. Hopefully once I get myself a hide I'll be able to get up a bit closer.

Believe those who are seeking the truth. Doubt those who find it...

Well it took me a reaaaaly long time to finish her, but here she is with her new face. Personally, I love her!! It was such fun photographing her! I don't know if she needs a new name maybe?...

Esta es mi antigua Pip, por fin le hice nuevo carving y maquillaje. Me encanta como ha quedado!

I don't know what Pip was watching this evening, but with the green background of the young leaves it's as if you can see right through her.

The first of several Pip-verse villains I have to post.

Sorry, if you were hoping for bios, I just made 'em for kicks.

Anyway, this is the Joker. I admit he is very similar to Sam K Bricks' version. But things seem pretty chill when it comes to "borrowing" designs around here, so I assume it's okay.

Keep an eye out for the other villains coming soon!

The first (wood &) wool-garland I made was for Pip's 11th birthday and she was very angry with me when I sold it to someone else. so I made her a new one.

It will be pillow for me (I haven't got yet pillow for PTS4, so I decided to sew it by myself:).

A couple of months ago, Pip all of a sudden stopped eating and drinking. In winter she stays indoor most of the time, so we quickly noticed the change and took her to the vet immediately. She had blood test and was diagnosed with an inflammation of the kidneys or at least the area around them. She got some heavy medication and we took her home with us.

For a couple of days she hardly moved and still refused to drink or eat. One day we came home from work and really thought we were going to lose her. The next day, however, she showed signs of improvement and from there she slowly went to full recovery.

Myself and Pip decided to go and sit in the shade in the garden as the sun has appeared again! She insisted on taking her bear bag with her though.

We faced many bees, ants and mating dragonflies for these pictures!
