Lion's Gulch & Homestead Meadows hike
On national forest land just outside of Rocky Mountain National Park, trailhead at mile marker 8 on Hwy. 36 south of Estes Park.
Highlights:
- Dogs allowed off-leash
- Numerous stream crossings, great for the dogs to cool off
- Lots of shade along gulch
- Lots of green due to our rainy spring
- Blooming wildflowers
The plan was to get up early to beat the forecasted afternoon rain, high winds, and possible hail, but does 9:00 count as early? Didn't think so, but we went anyway, got to the trailhead a little before 11. The skies didn't look that bad, so we embarked on the hike.
The dogs really seemed to enjoy the hike -- along the gulch there were plenty of opportunities to splash in the creek, and there was lots of room to run in the meadow. They even tolerated the history lesson once we got to the homestead remains.
This is about as green as I can remember most any hike I've taken in the middle of the summer in CO -- undoubtedly a result of our unseasonably wet spring. In places (and with the rain we got on the hike out) I could almost imagine that we were somewhere in the Pacific northwest.
blocking the westminster traffic , dpac stopped at the lights to allow a school trippers across the road some seemed amused by the attention .i was too.
Acrylic on canvas. This is a pretty poor photo of the painting as I forgot to take a photo under good conditions!!! Agh!!!! But it does show it pretty well!
