In 1888, after abandoning further development in Newport Bay, James and Robert McFadden moved to a sand spit on the bay to establish a new pier, McFadden Wharf. It functioned as an offloading location until 1905 when it became a shipping wharf. The McFadden Wharf was destroyed by a hurricane in 1939. The current pier dates to 1940 and is a fishing pier like Balboa Pier only a few kilometers away, the two piers of Newport Beach.
