Asti, a charming comune in the Piedmont region of Italy, is renowned for its rich history and cultural heritage. Situated on the banks of the Tanaro River, approximately 55 kilometres east of Turin, Asti is celebrated for its viticulture, being a significant part of the Montferrat area, which is famous for its exquisite wines. The town's history dates back to the Neolithic period, and it became a prominent Roman settlement around 124 BC.
Today, visitors to Asti can enjoy exploring its medieval streets, tasting the renowned Asti Spumante and Moscato d'Asti wines, and participating in the annual Palio di Asti, one of the oldest recorded horse races in Italy.
In early February, we spent the afternoon walking through Piedmont Park. While a park, we were struck by the number of signs that have been installed proclaiming certain activities prohibited, discouraging people from actually using he park. We wondered what the point was - to perserve a manicured landscape for looking at, or for people to actually enjoy? It appears the Park Nazis are winning.

Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge (near Juliette, Georgia, USA) was filled with Pipevine Swallowtails during our visit in late May. I especially liked the effect of the orange underwing spots, which matched the orange of the Butterfly Weed.
