Happy "Looking close ... on Friday!"

Macro Mondays Games or Game Pieces theme.

Some fun childhood memories with this one, I used to play this a lot growing up.

I set up the jacks and ball on a piece of glass placed in a light tent. I shone a small torch on the gold jacks to get more of a glow to the bokeh.

The three front jacks measure a total of 6 cm across and the ball is 2.5 cm in diameter.

EXPLORE #35

When I come undone you bring me back again. Back under the stars, back into your arms. But, I don't wanna fall to pieces.

At the end of the same dive with the flame lobster (previous post), we stopped in the shallows to search for grass squid.

Expectations were low. These squid are tiny - think the size of your pinky fingernail. They are floating in a soup of sargassum bits and pieces, so they are well camouflaged. And to top it all off, we are in shallow water (2-3m) with waves rolling through to slosh this slurry of stuff back and forth. Placing them in the viewfinder is hard but even if you can do that, you still need to get the camera's autofocus to lock on to the right thing. I have plenty of blurry pics and a bunch of sharp pics of seaweed fragments. But all you need is one to work!

Note, this was shot with ambient light (because we were so shallow). Without strobes, the shutter speed could be raised above 1/250th, which was definitely helpful.

On earth there is no heaven, but there are pieces of it.

they fill in an empty space.

I took this shot while walking around Manayunk (a neighborhood in Philadelphia) with my family during a light rain. Looking at in on my computer screen, the buildings and towers reminded me of chess pieces. I used my Nikon D750 and Tokina 100mm for capture and Lightroom for processing.

Uluru is a large sandstone rock formation in the southern part of the Northern Territory in central Australia. The sandstone formation stands 348 m (1,142 ft) high, rising 863 m (2,831 ft) above sea level with most of its bulk lying underground, and has a total perimeter of 9.4 km (5.8 mi).

It is sacred to the Pitjantjatjara, the Aboriginal people of the area, known as Anangu. The area around the formation is home to an abundance of springs, waterholes, rock caves and ancient paintings. Uluru is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Uluru and Kata Tjuta, also known as the Olgas, are the two major features of the Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park. (Wikipedia)

This is the cut up version of the pomegranate that I picked today and brought inside to cut up and eat. My previous Flickr post is the whole pomegranate which you can also see down in the first comment.

Lighting: I lit this using two yongnuo strobes in 24 inch soft boxes placed on either side of the cut up fruit, which is on a piece of black Perspex. The strobes, in manual mode, were triggered with a Yongnuo RF-603N.

For this week's Macro Monday's theme I chose 'Damaged Glass'. Yesterday, we visited Dawlish for the first time and we spend some time wandering along the beach. While strolling along the shore I picked up a piece of very green polished glass. Just out of curiosity I kept on looking and within a very short time I almost had a handful of small pieces of different shades of green. There must be tons of that beach glass! As a coincidence, our little beach glass hunting adventure then led to this week's Macro Monday's theme - Damaged Glass.

Initially, I wanted to take a macro directly at the beach but we were already on our way back once I had the idea of using the beach glass for the upload today.

At home I placed the pieces on a black baking tray filled with a little bit of water and shone on the pile from the side.

Macro Mondays - Board game pieces

Snakes and Ladders

The aim is to roll the dice and get your playing piece from square 1 to square 100 to win....... but if your move lands on a snake you must slide down to its tail and back to where you came from BUT if you are lucky enough to land at the base of a ladder, you can climb to the top of it to progress your piece to the top!!

This game needs a lot of patience and a little bit of luck to win!!

but haven't.

Bruno: Alright, Julia! Let's get this puzzle done.

Julia: Bruno, you're super special but unfortunately I don't view you as a very good puzzle helper.

Bruno: What do you mean? I'm awesome. I know where ever piece goes.

Julia: Alright, then where does this one go?

Bruno: In my mouth. The ones with the sticky-outty pieces are the tastiest.

Julia: Bruno, you're not supposed to eat the pieces. You're supposed to put them together to make a picture.

Bruno: Got it. So where does that one go?

Julia: I don't know yet.

Bruno: Oooh, if you're lost I could put it in my mouth.

Julia: That's not the plan. We're looking for pieces of the same colour to go together for the picture.

Bruno: Um, Julia, I have a couple of problems.

Julia: Personal space and impulse control?

Bruno: Nope and nope. I don't know what the picture looks like and I'm moderately colour blind.

Julia: I'm sorry. I forgot about the colour blind part. But, if you look at the box you can see that it's a picture of a bunch of golden retrievers on a dock.

Bruno: On a dock? Golden retrievers? What a great idea!

Julia: We're not going swimming now. It's just a picture.

Bruno: Got it. I'm picturing myself on a dock after the puzzle is done. Now if you would just back up then I can start eating all of the pieces that we don't know where they go and we can get to the dock faster!

----------

COVID has revealed Julia's inner puzzler. And Bruno does love to put puzzle pieces on his inside. So, we usually keep him far away from the puzzles. But when I say him looking longingly at her and her puzzle I knew what needed to be done for his weekly photo.

And only one puzzle piece was partly mangled and pulled from the back of his throat during the photo session. I thank Karen for her reaction time on that.

trying to make sense of this puzzle

but feeling like the pieces are scattered all around this room

climbing the fence of my trouble

falling down once again to try and get there soon

oh but could I stand and wait for You

instead of running from this black to find my blue

oh and when will I just listen to the truth

that the pieces of this puzzle just don't fit without You

For the FGR theme

Get well soon, envier.

China, Harbin, "Ice & Snow Festival" on Sun Island.

The centre part of the over 120 mtr long & approx. 40 mtr high snow sculpture still in the finalizing carving process is the master piece & the main sculpture of the around 500 small size to larger sizes snow show pieces. The snow sculpture park is located next to the gigantic ice festival area

Sun island scenic area, covering about 3,800 hectares, approx. 35,25 square km, is the second biggest venue of the annual Harbin Ice & Snow Sculpture Festival & has become Harbin's main parkland & recreation area, used all year long.

The impressive "Ice & Snow Festival" is the greatest & unusual one in the world, therefore Harbin is also called the "Ice City".

The city centre Zhaolin Park futures the “Disney Ice Festival” as part of the Harbin "Ice & Snow Festival" / "Ice Lantern Festival". Besides the for floors ice castle with electric elevators there are more than hundred sculptures of different sizes & motives in the Zhaolin Park organized by Disney, at night all sculptures are colourful lighted with LED.

For the "Ice Festival" over a 100.000 Tons of Ice Blocks, cut from the around 1 mtr thick ice sheet covering the Song Hua River, are used for the festival sculptures & carvings from January till March. It is one of the largest of its kind & most interesting one in the World.

The carved fishermen Ice-lanterns can date back to ancient times. It was said that some fishermen made rough & simple ice-lanterns just for lighting. With the time passed, ice-lanterns embodied their cultural features & gradually the artistic fascination of making of ice-lanterns, ice sculptures started in the 1960th, leading to today's impressive Ice & Snow Festival.

Also in the city you will see everywhere ice carvings of all sizes, besides there are several expositions in different Park. The three major Parks are the Ice World, & the Snow Sculptures parks on Sun Island, they are more artistic, the Ice Carvings at the Zhao Lin Park by Disney in the centre of the City. Harbin Ice & Snow World are gigantic & LED illuminated at Night.

Harbin with population of almost 4.5 million, is heralded as the Ice City for its well-known unbelievably impressive ice & snow recreations during the yearly international “Ice & Snow Festival” from the end of December until beginning of March. Harbin is also well known besides his important historic & economic past & present for China, for its historical Russian heritage, this cultural influence is still notable till today.

Due to the Siberian high & Harbin in the Heilongjiang Province location above 45 degrees north latitude, the city is known for having the most bitterly cold winters among major Chinese cities. Winter Temperatures can drop to below -35° C., when I visited Harbin beginning of January the Temperature varied between -20°C & -26°C below, but with dry air.

As well the large Siberian Tiger & white tigers research centre, with about 500 tigers & a few other species, does an important work to prevent this species from extinction. The Research centre can be visited, tours in small a bus are available, passing through wide natural, separated, sections, however the focus point is to save the tigers.
