SEE IT LARGE!

First of all, if you'd like to know how to do something like this (this was done all in camera in one shot), then head over to YouTube and see THIS VIDEO that I made explaining the process.

When I was a kid some people in our town liked to tag the overpass or a blank wall at our high school or what not... just like every other town I suppose. I guess they just wanted to leave their mark somewhere... cause it was the only recognition that they were probably going to receive either now or later.

I knew the feeling. At an early age I felt very aware of my mortality and really wanted to leave something of myself behind to remind people that I was here. So I would draw, paint, write stories and later on I would end up writing and recording songs. But it didn't stop there. I continued by creating websites, designing posters, working as a graphic artist for several magazines and a newspaper, I wrote and directed a feature film which later led me to where I am today as a directer/producer for broadcast television.

But around the age of 15 or so, I became interested in pirate radio. I wanted so badly to have a venue to just say what I wanted when I wanted and to have people tune in and be interested. But for many reasons including lack of funds and of course the fear of getting caught, I never got past a very low power transmitter that only seemed to be heard over our neighbors cordless phone (I was seriously messing up her signal).

But then came the internet and then eventually the podcast and it's changed everything. For absolutely nothing you can record your own show and have if fed to millions of subscribers to say virtually anything I wanted. So I decided at the beginning of this year that I wanted to talk about my interests in photography and the 365 Days Project. I'd have a weekly show for the entire year and it would really be the answer to my long lost passion... and it would be legal!

I asked a friend (Mav) if he'd like to co-host and he of course said yes and it went SOOO well... until about July. Now we've only had a couple of shows since then and I really feel like I've disappointed people. I just feel like I'm burnt out and that... well... I have nothing left to say.

I plan to do at least a couple more shows before the years up, and hopefully Mav is up for it. But to those who were loyal fans of the show I just want to say that I'm sorry and that I hope that they months that you did follow the show were worth it. I met a lot of friends and got to see a lot of great photos and I know it was worth it to me. I feel like I might want to do some sort of audio podcast after the new year. But I'm not sure what it will be about.

But anyways, I guess I have left a few things behind for people to remember me by... I just hope it's not a mountain of useless crap... the equivalent to a bunch of McDonald's toys.

So two cool things happened today. I got my new Cactus triggers that I ordered a week ago (my old one was falling apart) so now I can use my Vivitar flash that I got few weeks ago and I was told that I needed to take some vacation before I lost it. I knew I was booked for the next two weeks so I needed to take it this week instead. So I'm sleepin' in!

Strobist info: Canon 430ex behind me at camera left and a Vivitar 285hv with an orange gel behind me at camera right.

Again, Check out this video that I made describing how to do this.

It's part of the Pocket Wizard Strobist contest and I could really use the prize of a couple of Pocket Wizards! Also, please rate it and leave a comment if you don't mind ;-). Thanks!

Allies and Morrison Studio, London, England

What an interesting day yesterday on Flickr, it seems that the Open House building of the day yesterday was 55 Baker Street and I can understand why. Its such a wonderful and captivating building, especially for us photographers. It was really interesting to see other photographers version and interpretations of the image I uploaded yesterday and of course the other parts of the building. This is why I really like the week following Open House London as I am really interested in what other photographers have visited and what they upload.

Anyway this was the second building that Mark Hepples and I visited on the Sunday. Being an architects studio you expect I really nice building and it didn't disappoint. Full of clean lines and bright airy spaces. Also utilising modern building materials and also modern technology to make environmentally friendly. At the centre of this building was this beauty! Not one of the easiest spiral staircases I have taken mind as I couldn't go to the bottom of the staircase and also with it being quite a short spiral staircase but non the less I thought the way it was lit up was awesome. I believe the building got a RIBA award in 2004.

I want your opinions, I am not sure if it will work better as a square crop or keep it like this? I can't decide which I prefer but might upload a square one later and see what you think.

When the night shows

the signals grow on radios

All the strange things

they come and go, as early warnings

Stranded starfish have no place to hide

still waiting for the swollen Easter tide

There's no point in direction we cannot

even choose a side.

I took the old track

the hollow shoulder, across the waters

On the tall cliffs

they were getting older, sons and daughters

The jaded underworld was riding high

Waves of steel hurled metal at the sky

and as the nail sunk in the cloud, the rain

was warm and soaked the crowd.

Impressive, atmospheric, just a little frightening, the long black and red hooded and robed figures of the Procession de la Sanch march slowly through the streets of Perpignan to the solemn beat of black veiled tambourines The Procession de la Sanch, which takes place every ’Vendredi Saint’, (Good Friday), opens the celebration of the Easter Holy week.

The brotherhood of “La Sanch” (the blood) was founded in1416 by Vincent Ferrier at the church of St Jaques in Perpignan, its origin to assist and accompany the condemned to their execution. A preacher, Ferrier is said to have undergone a life changing experience in 1398 when he nearly died of the fever, but was miraculously cured after Christ appeared to him in an apparition. He attracted followers, penitents from all walks of life, who he led around Europe, preaching penance and helping sinners to prepare for judgment and punishment. The wearing of the black and red hooded robes (orcaparutxe) was to prevent criminals being recognized and ‘lynched’ in the streets as pay back for crimes committed, and prisoners, penitents, (there to give solace to the person about to die), and executioner were hooded for maximum confusion.

The procession as a whole commemorates the Passion and the Agony of Christ. At the head of the parade walks a red robed figure “le regidor”, warning the crowds of the procession’s approach. by intermittently ringing an iron bell as he leads the penitents to the gallows. They carry ‘misteris’ (full-size representations of the different scenes of the Passion) through the streets of Perpignan. Of course, over the years the Sanch has become a great crowd puller and a fabulous photo opportunity but for the ‘penitents’ carrying crosses, crucifixes and religious statues weighing up to thirty to fifty kilos, this re- enactment of Christ’s Passion is real enough. The procession takes place in silence – some walk bare-foot, others are on their knees…... only the sound of the tambourine, and the occasional peal of the bell breaks the eerie atmosphere, along with the Goigs, traditional Easter songs which accompany the march.

Over the centuries the Sanch has been forbidden several times. It has always survived.

Final [4 of 4] of a short 'Mood' street series. [Or, just another excuse to play around with post processing techniques! : ) ] All these shots were taken in a 2-3 minute walk up the high street, and all shots were taken with my camera at chest level. [That is, making no real attempt to hide the camera, but making eye contact with people, while holding the camera in an obvious/suspicious way.]

Out of Walmart and it was snowing to my surprise. Walmart is a cesspool of a merchant retailer serving the masses. I don't like being there. So it was time to get out while the getting was good. I made a decision to drop off my dad and go take a picture.

VER EN NEGRO _ VIEW IN BLACK !!

En las pálidas tardes

yerran nubes tranquilas

With the wings of the soul deployed to the wind,

at each notice of wonder, of injustice,

I bleed inside

and it hurts the people, their pain, their wounds

because it only interpret life.

ENGLISH

... I published my first photo in Flickr. One was gulls in the border of a channel of Amsterdam, and I did it as always had made the photos, without thinking about: frame & shoot.

Concepts like composition, vanishing point, depth of field… they was Greek for me. Little by little I was knowing people and seeing their photos, and with this I discovered techniques like the HDR, Orton, tilt-shift, cut-out… and what meant those concepts that was Greek for me. I began to crop, to adjust levels, to play with “the constructive” adjustment of photos, in which without altering the composition it could give another air to them… I discovered the beauty of black and white and the nostalgic air of the old photography. In addition now I can imagine the photographies before to shoot them. I imagine the framing, the values of exposure and diaphragm… even what treatment I will give them later.

In summary, in this year I have learned many things of photography, and what is more important still, I have known a lot of people, magnificent photographers of all around the world to whom I admire and I envy their work, and simultaneously moves to me when they say that they like some photo mine.

Now beginning a new year in Flickr, and I do not think to let learn new things and experiment with them. Good proof of it is this reedition of my first photo, to that I have applied to a HDR and Fattal tone mapping, and then “draganized”. I already know that “draganized” goes better with portraits in first plane and well illuminated, but I wanted to prove it here, and I have liked the result. I hope that to you too, and if no, let me know.

Since you see, also I have changed my buddy icon and my name. I am not very friend to be changing of name, but I only signed in Flickr to organize my photos and to show them of a simple way to family and friends, and smb_flickr was “an accidental” name. What I did not know that it go to become so popular (I look for it in Google and it appears 57,200 times) and I take advantage of the anniversary to be more serious. ;-)

Thanks to visit and to comment my photos. It serves me to learn and to improve.

CASTELLANO

Gracias por visitar y comentar mis fotos. Me sirve para aprender y mejorar.

In Idaho's Swan Valley is this old school house. We had a great day with cloud-filled skies. Here, the lighting was changing by the minute as the clouds moved by.

I placed the old building off-center and put the far-away red-roofed farm house buildings to the left as a minor element of the composition.

Sincerest Critic of my Prose or Rhyme,

Tell how thy pleasing Stowe employs thy Time.

Say, Cobham, what amuses thy Retreat,

Or Schemes of War, or Stratagems of State?

Dost thou recall to Mind with Joy or Grief

Great Marlborough's Actions, that immortal Chief,

Whose slightest Trophy raised in each Campaign

More than sufficed to signalise a Reign?

Does the Remembrance, rising, warm thy Heart

With Glory past, where Thou thyself hadst Part,

Or dost thou grieve indignant, now, to see

The fruitless End of all that Victory?

To see the Audacious Foe, so late subdued,

Dispute those Terms for which so long they sued,

As if Britannia now were sunk so low,

To beg that Peace she wonted to bestow.

Be far that Guilt, be never known such Shame,

That England should retract her rightful Claim,

Or, ceasing to be dreaded and adored,

Stain with the Pen the Lustre of her Sword!

Or dost thou give the Winds afar to blow

Each vexing Thought and Heart-devouring Woe,

And fix thy Mind alone on rural Scenes,

To turn the levelled Lawns to liquid Plains,

To raise the creeping Rills from humble Beds,

And force the latent Springs to lift their Heads,

On watery Columns Capitals to rear

That mix their flowing Curls with upper air?

Or dost Thou, weary grown, these Works neglect,

No Temples, Statues, Obelisks erect,

But seek the morning Breeze from fragrant Meads,

Or shun the Noontide Ray in wholesome Shades,

Or slowly walk alone the mazy Wood,

To meditate on all that's wise and good?

For Nature, bountiful, in Thee has joined

A Person pleasing with a worthy Mind,

Not given the Form alone, but Means and Art

To draw the Eye or to allure the Heart.

Poor were the Praise in Fortune to excel,

Yet want the Way to use that Fortune well.

While thus adorned, while thus with Virtue crowned,

At Home in Peace, Abroad in Arms renowned,

Graceful in Form and winning in Address,

While well you think what aptly you express,

With Health, with Honour, with a fair Estate,

A Table free, and elegantly neat,

What can be added more to mortal Bliss?

What can he want who stands possessed of This?

What can the fondest wishing Mother more

Of Heaven attentive for her Son implore?

And yet a Happiness remains unknown,

Or to Philosophy revealed alone;

A Precept, which unpracticed renders vain

Thy flowing Hopes, and Pleasure turns to Pain.

Should Hope and Fear thy Heart alternate tear,

Or Love, or Hate, or Rage, or anxious Care,

Whatever Passions may thy Mind infest,

(Where is that Mind which passions ne'er molest?)

Amid the Pangs of such intestine Strife,

Still think the Present Day thy Last of Life;

Defer not till to-Morrow to be wise,

To-Morow's Sun to Thee may never rise.

Or should to-Morrow chance to cheer thy Sight

With her enlivening and unlooked-for Light,

How grateful will appear her dawning Rays,

As Favours unexpected doubly please!

Who thus can think and who such Thoughts pursues,

Content may keep his Life, or calmly lose;

A Proof of this Thou mayest thyself receive,

When Leisure from Affairs will give thee Leave.

Come, see thy Friend, retired without Regret,

Forgetting Cares, or trying to forget;

In easy Contemplation soothing Time

With Morals much, and now and then with Rhyme;

Not so robust in Body as in Mind,

And always undejected, though declined;

Not wondering at the World's new wicked Ways,

Compared with those of our Forefathers' Days;

For Virtue now is neither more or less,

And Vice is only varied in the Dress.

Believe it, Men have ever been the same,

And all the Golden Age is but a Dream.

Hohensalzburg Castle (Festung Hohensalzburg) is a castle in the Austrian city of Salzburg. It sits on Festungsberg hill. With a length of 250 meters and a width of 150 meters, it is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe.

This is again from my archives a single RAW file tonemapped and digitally blended using Photoshop.

Trivia

During the early 20th century it was used as a prison, holding Italian prisoners of war during World War I and Nazi activists (before the Anschluss with Germany) in the 1930s. It was refurbished in the 20th century and became a major tourist attraction, with a cable car, built in 1900, leading up from the town to the Hasengrabenbastei. It stands today as one of the best preserved castles in Europe. Source: Wikipedia

La Bisbal d'Empordà is the capital of the comarca of the Baix Empordà in Catalonia, Spain.

The town is 29 km south east of Girona, 12 km west of Palafrugell and 19 km north west of Palamós. The town lies on the C-66 road between Girona and Palafrugell/Palamós where it becomes the C-31. The GI-660 to Calonge and Sant Feliu de Guíxols and GI-664 to Cassà de la Selva cross the Gavarres mountains.

The town's name is derived from the Catalan bisbe, meaning "bishop", as the town was under the control of the bishops of Girona from the Carolingian period. It is constructed on the site of the Roman settlement of Fontanetum, and is sometimes referred to as Fontanet in Old Catalan. The Spanish name of La Bisbal del Ampurdán is no longer in official use.

The current settlement can be dated at least to the consecration of the church of Santa Maria de la Bisbal in 901 (the current baroque building dates from the seventeenth century). The fortified episcopal palace occupies a large part of the historic town centre.

The municipality lies on the northern edge of the Gavarres mountains and on the banks of the Darò river a tributary of the River Ter.

The town became home to a substantial number of French immigrants after the French Revolution of 1789. The saw several battles during the Napoleonic Wars (Peninsular War). General O'Donnell routed the French forces of General Schwarz at La Bisbal in 1811. The town was briefly occupied by Carlist forces in 1874 during the Third Carlist War.

The towns economy is heavily based on pottery as well as agriculture.

The town is one of the traditional centres of the sardana dance.

A panorama planet is supposed to consist of a 360 degree pano. I can't think of a place right now but I did want to test this with my fisheye lens. Not perfect, but not bad.

I may do something tomorrow to shoot a 360 pano.

Story

"Entire generations may pass devoid of great discoveries".

This was almost one of those generations.

The year 4561 saw the end of the Terpon Zoning Wars with the lion's share of the spoils going to the Beulorians. Most of the wars were fought in the courtrooms and the Beulorians were defending what they considered to be a fair claim. The Terpon Cluster was an uninhabited star grouping that sat on the fringes of the secluded Vierian System and was mostly considered a vast wasteland. Beulor was the only planet that supported life in the Vierian System. When their explorations reached as far as the Terpon Cluster, they discovered a widely spanning asteroid field. It was believed they were verging on something quite amazing. The cluster remained to that date unclaimed and despite their reputation as rash businessmen, Beulor's interest in the region quickly drew a crowd of suitors.

The Beulorians fought passionately in the Universal Courts for the cluster. Their win was attributed mostly to their command of their native tongue, which they insisted on using and was largely unintelligible by most other civilized races.

In the six years immediately following their 'victory', the Beulorians began mining the asteroids. Their exhaustive exploration revealed nothing, and tons of it. Their resources were quickly drained and living up to their well-deserved reputation, the Beulorians looked to sell the lot. The potential investment was overwhelmingly ignored.

A coalition of interstellar industrialists took interest. This coalition was represented by the biggest stakeholder Llwyngwril Systems. Already famous for their manufacturing of practical yet ridiculous vehicles, as well as the virtual impossibility of correctly pronouncing the company name without pulling a muscle, the representatives of Llwyngwril saw potential where other parties saw only insurmountable risk. They lowballed the Beulorians with an offer that they, themselves, considered completely unreasonable. But seeing it as the only opportunity to dump an investment they felt was destined to yield no return whatsoever, the Beulorians hastily accepted the offer. They went on and toasted themselves 'the greatest salesmen in the Universe'.

Within mere days of the property changing hands, the new owners started setting up mining facilities on the largest asteroids in the field. Adler Corporation planted several bunkers, CS fanatics became active on the surface, Tequilatron began plasmamining, Llwyngwril deployed their Gourmet Grinders and several private contractors initiated deep core mining. The representatives were surprised that the Beulorians had not yet mined these rocks. This astonishment was soon replaced by joy when several deep core miners stumbled across a new element. In an effort to make it easy to pronounce, the coalition named the element ABS, or ABSinite. It was easily smelted, melted down into a variety of ABS shapes, easily dyed and was bulletproof. Its potential profitability was immediately recognized.

The Beulorians who facilitated the transaction were promptly outsmarted and dealt with. According to the planet's laws, for the most punishable and commonly committed crime of being rash. The coalition took over the asteroid fields and expanded their effort till the very last rock. This started an era that would become known as 'The Great Terpon Mining Frenzy'.

As all businesses eventually experience, the criminal element wormed its way into the action. Completely incapable of original ideas that lead to any semblance of profitability, but perfectly adept at being ruthless and covered in unmanageable hair, Thondan pirates made frequent passes through the cluster. Their aim was set for cargo carriers and freighters destined for the more populated and high-demand regions of the Universe. Recently discovering stealth technology, the criminals of Blacktron found their way into the cluster as well, secretly scanning remaining asteroids for small profits. Tapping and stealth mining became an almost regular thing. The alien species of Ethel Mertz too noticed the boost of activity in the region. So they began storming the nebulae situated in the cluster and learned how to extract ABS from the toxic clouds. Being at war with the humans from 4518 to 4546, the coalition had a bitter aftertaste about the Mertz' presence in the area. Nebulae mining was mostly tolerated though, as the clouds were marked as too irradiated for their vessels to approach.

To combat the criminal activity, the coalition funded an effort to patrol and survey ongoing mining operations. The powerful Galactic Anthropic Imperial Armada (GAIA) stepped in and signed the lucrative contract. Now overseeing daily business in luxury cruiseliners converted into battleships, GAIA keeps an eye out for smugglers, pirates and criminals. With an inexhaustible supply of weaponry and hubris. The system is well known for their ships now hovering in the middle of dense industrial territory. Their singular mission being to fire 'tiny' missiles at approaching enemies and occasionally pointing their formidable triple cannons at the intruders only to extend the middle one into the air. Hubris.

The arrangement has proven reasonably effective and the benefit of fewer troubles with pirates allowed the coalition to overlook the fact that the gigantic spaceships frequently clogged up viable trade routes.

The system is now one of the most active industrial zones in the history of the Interstellar Transport Agency. The huge variety of ships and building styles in the system attracts spaceship spotters from all across the galaxy.

Individual builds and backgrounds

- Topsy Creatori

- Creation: D.U.D. Barges, space cargo

Built and piloted by Darkla's M3D Marauders, the typical red/black D.U.D. Barges are seen flying in to the asteroid field to collect ABS. Little is known as to what purpose Darkla's empire would use the resources. The archives only show a lucrative private contract, set up with an anonymous company.

- Starscream Soundwave

- Creation: Private party, heavy duty mining ships

Extracting as much ABS as is available for the highest bidder. This is the aim of the submarine-like mining fleet. Their appearance is matched with their heavy armor, protecting the valuable goods inside. Two mining lasers on the front do the extracting. Contents are usually picked up by mobile processing ships or high capacity freighters.

- Locutus666

- Creation: Blacktron I, # 6985 upgraded ABS Prospector

Blacktron got word of the mining operations going on in section D 887. They just needed to venture out and take their slice. Joining the party in the second stage, a stealth prospector is seen scanning the remaining asteroids for quantities of ABS.

- Marc Edge R.unde

- Creation: GAIA, HMS Misirlou

With the increasing threat of pirates within the quadrant, local authorities called upon the Galactic Anthropic Imperial Armada to oversee ongoing operations. An Alexandria Class Destroyer (HMS Misirlou) is seen bombarding an incoming Thondan pirate ship.

- David Roberts

- Creation: Llwyngwril Systems, 'Gourmet' Asteroid miner

Llwyngwril Systems' Gourmet Grinder is a mining machine with and integral smelting furnace under its belly. It is serviced by two smaller ships. One has big tongs for removing the ore from the back of the smelter and the other one carries it away to the nearest station or processing facility.

- David Alexander Smith

- Creation: CS, Mineral Sorting Plant

General deposits of ABS found on the surface of asteroids are mostly exploited by the CS fanatics. Industrial mineral sorting stations pop up everywhere, as well as the landvehicles scraping the soil.

- Clayton Marchetti

- Creation: Space Freighter S.S. 5906 "Goliath"

The golden carriages of the galactic speedways. Carrying vast amounts of cargo, these freighters are slow but very profitable. Usually these ships buy up all local resources, which get transported to areas with a high demand rate. Their big fuselages make easy targets to get a lock on for ill tempered pirates though.

- Matt Rowntree

- Creation: Ethel Mertz, Thurston Howell mkIII, Lurch class ABS extraction frigate

Unlike most human explorers and miners, this alien species is able to extract ABSinite from the irradiated nebulae efficiently. The Ethel Mertz and Terran miners continue to co-exist as they do not venture into eachother's territory. Means of contact and communication remain strictly forbidden though, causing a tenuous relationship.

- Tom Remy

- Creation: Liquid ABS processing facility

The deep core extraction pillar digs into the asteroid, extracting and processing the highly toxic liquid absinite. This is the kind that can be turned into hard, transparent clear, cat-hair proof-absinite products. Dropships fly in and out of the landing pad to deliver the goods to local buyers.

- Tim Clark

- Creation: The 'Scallywag', Thondan pirate ship

Thondan pirates are well equipped and known for their ruthless tactics. Not interested in interstellar politics or trade, their goal is nothing but personal profit. The ominously looking Scallywag is seen warping into the sector, directly locking on to a freighter. That Absinite is going nowhere.

- Stephan Niehoff

- Creation: Adler Corporation, fuel refinery

In this facility, the mineral Reebit is won out of ABS. Reebit is prepared in powder form of two quality standards. Reebit is stored in silos for fueling and an explosive component. The refinery is sturdily built like a bunker, relying on it's defensive capability and protection from others.

- Pico van Grootveld

- Creation: Tequilatron, deep space drill operation

Tequilatron is the universe's number 1 provider in salts and liquor, famed for their spirits and tuk-tuks. The new Mobile 'King' drill, a walker and several type II plasmadrills are seen extracting ABS for their next new drink prototype. Scientist are still in search of a fitting name for their green spirit.

September 2012, update

Hi folks. I reprocessed (and replaced) the above shot this week to transfer it to canvas and large prints.

The wide angle lenses I use (back in 2011 I used the Sigma 10-20 on DX, now the Sigma 12-24 on FX) give quite some distortion, especially in the far corners. It's not always easy to get rid of it.

This time I went through the whole process again to correct the Ferry House, and bring it back to its true proportions.

Why am I doing this? Well, because I have my first exhibition Saturday, September 29. Where? Over here in this old Ferry house itself! :) Due to the 350th anniversary of the Hoge Brug in Overschie there's all kinds of festivities. One of them is the Ferry House opening its doors in the afternoon. The owner asked me to show my Overschie photo work over here, and I gladly agreed.

Info: www.museumoudoverschie.nl/nl/main/agenda/350-jaar-hoge-br...

Everybody's welcome of course to meet and greet and you can win a nifty canvas too. At the end of the day I'm selling my large prints (50x75 and 30x45) at special prices.

I'll keep you posted. I'm busy with processing, flyers, prints and marketing the whole thing, so I'll be on and off. Ta!

November 2011, nice story...

The Ferry House (Veerhuis) which I regularly shoot in Overschie was sold to a new owner.

I got contacted by him recently, and was asked if I could deliver a blow-up of one of my recent shots he loved (see below), to put it on the wall of his new home. Of course I gladly accepted the assignment! Yesterday I brought a huge canvas of the image (see below) to the Ferry house (wasn't easy, it's located on an impossible spot!) which is heavily renovated at the mo'.

I got a 'guided tour' through the house (from 1747) and I found out that Anton Pieck had lived here, which was news to me. There was a huge stone in the living room wall saying "Anton Pieck, November 1982". You can find Anton Pieck's take on the Ferry house and church over here. It's really nice (from 1948). A very nice experience all-round! Thx Joost, succes with the renovation!

If you are a die hard Mac user like I am, then no trip to NY is complete without a visit to the Apple Store on 5th Ave near Central Park. The store is below ground and entry is through a well guarded glass cube, and although no photos are allowed within the glass cube or in the store, I managed to squeeze off this shot from just inside.....:-)))

Take a look at this panoramic view of the area on opening day in 2006

BTW, for those of you who have frequently asked about the processing I use, it is almost exclusively done using Aperture II (Apple's Professional Photo Program) on my Mac Book Pro. For me Apple provides the right combination of tools and I could not imagine being without them....:-)))

Shot it at Kumbha Mela 2010.Its a greatest show on Earth.

In Hindu mythology, its origin is found in one of the popular creation myths and the Hindu theories on evolution, the Samudra manthan episode (Churning of the ocean of milk), which finds mention in the Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu Purana, the Mahabharata, and the Ramayana.

The Gods had lost their strength, and to regain it, they thought of churning the Ksheera Sagara (primordial ocean of milk) for amrit (the nectar of immortality), this required them to make a temporary agreement with their arch enemies, the demons or Asuras, to work together with a promise of sharing the nectar equally thereafter. However, when the Kumbha (urn) containing the amrita appeared, a fight ensued. For twelve days and twelve nights (equivalent to twelve human years) the gods and demons fought in the sky for the pot of amrita. It is believed that during the battle, Lord Vishnu flew away with the Kumbha of elixir, and that is when drops of amrita fell at four places on earth: Prayag, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik, and that is where the Kumbh Mela is observed every twelve years.

First written evidence of the Kumbha Mela can be found in the accounts of Chinese traveller, Huan Tsang or Xuanzang (602 - 664 A.D.) who visited India in 629 -645 CE, during the reign of King Harshavardhana.

You drove me, nearly drove me, out of my head

While you never shed a tear

Remember, I remember, all that you said

You told me love was too plebeian

Told me you were through with me

Now you say you're sorry

For being so untrue

Well, you can cry me a river

Cry me a river

I cried a river over you

Shot it at "Gajan Fair".

Gajan a Shaivite folk festival, held on CHAITRA SANGKRANTI (the last day of Chaitra..according to eng calendar ,its in middle of april) and on full moon nights up to the full moon of Asadh. The festival is associated with various gods. There may thus be SHIVA's Gajan, the Gajan of DHARMA THAKUR, the Gajan of Nil etc. But the main object of this festival is to celebrate the marriage of the sun and the earth. The reason for this festival is perhaps to appease the sun and pray for rain during the hot, dry month of Chaitra.

The festival is arranged on the premises of Shiva temples. Those who take part in the festival after making vows are called sannyasi or bhaktya. They take sacrificial food and wear uturi (wrappers). Each one holds a staff. They try to satisfy the god through different acts of penance, such as piercing their tongues with nails, jumping upon thorns, walking on burning charcoal, etc. CHADAK PUJA is performed on the occasion of the Gajan festival. During this festival, processions are brought out from the premises of the temple of Shiva and taken to other villages. A pair of processionists take the roles of Shiva and Gauri and render dances. Other bhaktyas take the roles of Nandi, Bhrngi, ghosts and spirits, monsters and demons and dance along with Shiva and Gauri. During this time different verses are recited narrating the story of how Shiva's sleep was disturbed and going on to his marriage, his agricultural activities etc. This festival usually lasts for three days. During the gajan on Chaitra Samkranti, Kali dances are also performed in some places describing how the goddess slaughtered the monster Asura.

Crystal clear water, white sand and blue sky; maybe this is the definition of tropical paradise.

Located 20 minutes east of Phuket, Koh Khai Nok is a tiny idyllic island; little more than a forested lump poking out of the sea ringed by white sand and coral. I heard during high tides only peak of these rocks can be seen while rest goes under the water.

Newly plowed alfalfa hay fields lay below snow-covered mountains in central Utah. We estimated over two-thousand Mule Deer foraging in these fields over a thirty-mile span of US-89 which runs through the Sanpete valley.

Since settlement(1850s), Sanpete County's economy has been based on agriculture. In its first few decades it served as Utah's granary. Sheep dominated the local economy from the 1880s through the 1920s, and the county played a prominent part in world markets for a time. Turkeys, grown casually as a farmyard animal, became a cooperative, integrated industry in response to the 1930s Great Depression. Today they rule the roost in Sanpete, which ranks among the top ten turkey-producing counties in the country. Sanpete's location at Utah's geographical heart masks its isolation. Much interstate and recreational traffic bypasses it. The small, scattered towns with their long and interesting rivalries have never allowed the development of a dominant county economic center.

I have been wanting to do a shoot like this for a while. Ever since I saw Simon Filip's stop motion I have been so inspired by it. I love how there was so much detail in his music video and it was all so beautiful.

I set up this shoot by myself. This was the first shoot I have ever done that was well thought out. Usually my photos come to me and I shoot, but this one I thought long and hard about it.

This photo wouldnt look it's best without a little help of some people. I would like to thank my grandmother for allowing me to use her typewriter and flowers, my little sister for letting me use her butterfly (the one on the table in the jar - it is real but dead). I would also like to thank my friend Daniel for letting me use his birdcage at short notice. I appreciate it. And i would also like to thank my mom for driving me and my model to this location and sitting in the 90 degree weather for 2 hours while we shoot. Last but certainly not least, thank you Marlene. I am so glad you like doing shoots with me. You are so beautiful and patient with me and you didnt care that it was hot and the ants were crawling on you. :)

"AS IT IS TOLD IN THE STARS…"

Like so many days before, the princess and her beloved guardian wolf went exploring. It should be told here that the bond she and the wolf have is a mystery for all. When the wolf was just 5 years old, a peculiar old lady, gifted the wolf to the family of the princess upon her birth and since then the wolf never left the princess’ side. He slept at her crib, watched over her as she played; she was never out of his sight.

As she grew older, they began to explore the lands together. This is something they loved to do. The wolf allowed her to ride on his back since he was very large and very strong.

During the nights the princess would lay cuddled against the wolf longing to have him forever.

On this particular night, which happened to be night of the princess’ 18th birthday, the princess lay with her wolf, as they have done since she was a child. The sound of thunder suddenly startled the wolf awake. Worried and protective as he always was he stood over his beloved princess. Nothing more happened and she caressed his fur to calm him and make him sleep again.

While exploring the next day in the mountains the wolf and princess came upon a small, strange, sparkling creature. Being his usual protective self the wolf growled at it. Worried that it might try to harm his precious princess. The princess stroked his fur softly, leaned to his ear, and whispered “Shhhhh, my wolf, it is just a fairy.” This did not calm him since he did not trust this creature one bit. He growled at her even more as the fairy smacked him on the nose with her sparkling stick. At that very moment the wolf felt a strange sensation, his mind began to spin. The fairy flew off quickly, giggling until she was out of sight. He looked up and whimpered at the princess, wanting a kiss on his nose in return for making the fairy go away. She leaned down and kissed him as she did so many times. This time he felt the kiss was different, it warmed his heart and soul as always but this time it also gave him a feeling as if there were butterflies in his tummy.

They wandered back into the village, returning home at dusk. The princess fed the wolf and they climbed into bed together. He licked her on the nose and rolled on his side so she could cuddle up to him. That night the wolf had strange dreams. He dreamt he was a human and not a wolf. The wolf was finally able to talk with her, to hold her, to kiss her, to do things he saw so many lovers do and only wished he could.

He woke from this nightmare and gasped. Looking down at his paws, he saw human hands. He quickly looked to his body; there was no fur, but instead his naked human skin. He lay back down moving closer to the princess, caressing her soft, silken skin. This sensation gave him tingles throughout his body. He kissed her neck, her cheek and finally her lips softly. The princess opened her eyes quickly, scared of this man next to her, pushing him away, screaming for her wolf to protect her. He placed his hand over her mouth and tried to calm her by saying, “ssshh…..it is I, my princess, your wolf.“

From that day forward the princess had her wolf as a human and as a strong wolf.

For many years they kept it a secret that he was a shape shifter…

After having a fantastic chocolate fondue, my friend and I decided to have a walk and to take some pictures in the streets of Augsburg. She grabbed her EOS 5D and the Nifty Fifty and I used my EOS 400D with the EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM (my EF 50mm f1.8 was stolen during the Stars & Cars event) otherwise we would have had a quite interesting comparison for both cameras.

The monastery of Sant Cugat is a former Benedictine abbey located in the Catalan town of Sant Cugat del Valles (Spain). The monastery, built in the ninth century, noted for its impressive cloister. It was the most important monastery throughout the county of Barcelona. The origins of the monastery is located in the ninth century when he decided to join the church containing the remains of St. Cucufate or San Cucuphas (Cugat in Catalan) with a fortification attached. The small church built in the V century, was a small square enclosure around which people believe there was already a community of monks. However, there are reports documented the existence of this community until the year 878. In the early tenth century the importance of the monastery began to be noticeable. The abbots of San Cugat took part in important events and possessions of the community is coming to have land extending from the Penedes area to Montseny. In the year 985, the attack of the troops commanded by Mansur Saracens hit the monastery but did not damage too severe. The abbot, who ruled the monastery at that time, Odo began the reconstruction of the monastery. In the late XI, Berenguer Ramon II decreed that the monastery becomes subject to St Ponce de Tomieres, in the Provence area, creating discrepancies between the monks of Sant Cugat. The abbot of St. Ponce moved to the Catalan monastery and the monks who disagreed with his administration were expelled. However, the bishop of Barcelona claimed their rights over the monastery which was once again subjected to the diocese of Barcelona. It was during this period when most were extended domains San Cugat. Were liable to the same monastery of Santa Cecilia, the Sant Llorenç del Munt, Sant Pau del Camp, Sant Pere de Clará and Sant Salvador de Breda. A mid-twelfth century began construction of a new monastery. Existing church was expanded in a work that lasted over time, since its construction was not completed until 1337.

In the year 1350, work began defense of the monastery. King Pedro III extended this fortification by adding a few guard towers. However, in this period began the decline of Sant Cugat. The abbot Pere Busquets abolished the direct election of the abbot by the monks. The new abbots were appointed from the diocese and some of them even visited the monastery. Although it continued to make some plays, San Cugat longer had the power of old. During the War of Spanish Succession, the monastery was occupied by troops of the Archduke Charles, an occupation that caused serious damage to the building. It undertook a restoration that ended in 1789.

In 1835 the monks left the monastery, the abandonment was caused in part by the law that forced confiscation of religious orders to abandon their belongings, and in part by the assault of a group of locals. Sant Cugat was abandoned until 1851, when the Landmarks Commission decided restaurarlo.En 1931 was declared a Historic Artistic Monument.

Perhaps the highlight of the whole of the monastery of San Cucuphas is its impressive cloister. This is a clear example of Catalan Romanesque art and was built in the twelfth century. In the sixteenth century added a second floor and also built the entrance hall. With a length of over 30 meters, the cloister is work by the artist Arnau Gatell. Its plan is almost square and has round arches, supported on pairs of columns. Each of these columns is decorated with capitals is finely produced, with detail varied, ranging from animals to represent biblical scenes. You can expect 72 pairs of capital. Another feature is the basilica, built in Gothic style in this case. The building, 52 meters long by 23 wide, has three naves covered with vaults supported by columns. It is striking rosette of 8.2 meters in diameter, much like the cathedral of Barcelona and Tarragona. The church contains a Gothic altarpiece, known as the altar of All Saints, made in 1375 by artist Pere Serra.

Have you ever had someone look at one of your photos and comment "Gee, you must have a really nice camera"?

A friend sent me an email the other day wanting to know if he should spend (a fortune) to buy a laundry list of new camera equipment because he wanted to "take better photos".

In response to that, I wanted to post this shot taken with a $199 "point and shoot" 3-megapixel digital camera. I keep it in my briefcase when I'm traveling on business and can't take my D90.

Would this shot have been better with my Nikon? Sure.... there is some noise in the sky due to using a high ISO on a cheap camera and the optics can't match a $1200 lens.... but the basic image would have been the same.

Becoming a better photographer is about learning to see differently, experimenting, learning, challenging yourself - not about how much equipment you purchase.

This NetJets Europe (NJE) Phenom 300 had been a first time sighting for me when I dropped my son & daughter in law off for their trip to Scotland on 27September 2021. I think it went 'tech' on that day whilst trying to depart to Luton (LTN) and was still here on 1st October. Delivered in July 2020; c/n 50500546

About this photo: It was a gorgeous sunny week last week with about +11C/52F and you could feel the warmth of the sun. On days like that I can't help but wanting to go out and enjoy the weather and take some photos. I ended up going to Pitt Lake in Pitt Meadows which is a 20-25 minute drive from my place.

Once you drive through this area you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere as there is hardly anybody around and hardly any cars on this road (especially on a week day in the mornings) and that only about 15 minutes away from a fair sized town. I stopped alongside the road a little ways before arriving at Pitt Lake to capture this photo of the road leading to the beautiful mountain views with some fresh powder snow on top. I just love these views!

Some information on the Pitt Lake area: Pitt Lake is located in Grant Narrows Regional Park in Pitt Meadows which is about 45 minutes east of downtown Vancouver. Pitt Lake is the second-largest lake in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, being about 53.5 square km (20.5 square mi) in area. It is about 25km (15.6mi) long and about 4.5km (2.8mi) wide at its widest, and is also one of the world's largest tidal lakes, its confluence with the Fraser being only a few miles upstream from that river's estuary into the Strait of Georgia. Its southern tip, where the Pitt River resumes, is 40km (25mi) east of downtown Vancouver.

The upper Pitt River valley is a typical U-shaped glacial valley in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia. The over-deepening of the lower end of the valley over the span of the Wisconsin glaciation created a trough over 140m (462ft) below current sea level. After initial glacial retreat at around 13,000 years ago a saltwater fjord occupied this basin when relative sea levels were still ca 120m (396ft) to 140m (462ft) above current levels in the region. Unlike neighbouring Indian Arm and Howe Sound farther west this fjord basin became cut off by sedimentation of the lower Fraser River by ca 10,500 years ago and is now considered a tidal fjord lake.

The community of Pitt Meadows occupies the marshy lowland at the southern end of the lake, some of which has become drained and is known as the Pitt Polder. Just southwest of the lake is the community of Port Coquitlam, which is across the Pitt River from Pitt Meadows. At the north end of the lake is a locality named Alvin, which is a transport and shipping point for logging companies and their employees. The Upper Pitt, meaning the valley upstream from the lake, is considered BC's best fly-fishing rivers and one of its best steelhead streams.

The lake is popular with boaters and canoeists, but is prone to heavy winds and rains as well as big waves (due to its great depth). The mountain range on its east flank comprises Golden Ears Provincial Park, its basin to the north is in southern Garibaldi Provincial Park, while the mountain range on its west, northeast of Vancouver's Coquitlam Lake watershed reservoir, is Pinecone Burke Provincial Park. The waterfront and foreshore of the lake and river are public-access and include extensive migratory wildfowl habitat. There is a destination golfing resort in the Pitt Polder area called Swan-e-set.

The area along the east side of the lake is somewhat famous for being the reputed location of Slumach's lost gold mine, the location of many failed and sometimes disastrous searches for the alleged murderer's lost gold mine. (Info from Wikipedia).
