Garden Grub 1/120
elizabeth pointed us to "Garden Grub 120", a group devoted to taking photos of the food prepared from the garden (or just pictures of the garden itself on those nights we order pizza or something [although it shouldn't be forgotten that take-out pizza is really phenomenal when topped with fresh-picked frying peppers]). We'd already decided we needed to do some kind of photo-a-day thing of the garden because every year August rolls around and we figure we can't take more pictures of tomatoes and peppers because we've taken them all before. But then February rolls around and all we want is to see pictures of the lush garden in late summer. D'oh! This must not happen this year!
Anyway, this is a salad made from butterhead buttercrunch lettuce grown on the deck, and coral shell peas grown in the garden. The carrots are from the grocery store (the storeshare?).
Sweat Pea socks by Melissa Morgan-Oakes (free pattern at Knitty; yarn is Indigo Moon Merino Fingering in Green Apple; sock has been shortened to biking/hiking length and the ruffled edge in the pattern has been replaced with a Latvian Twist edging.

It's been a chilly gardening season this year but at least the cool weather crops are doing well. These peas are now frozen for winter soups.
Here you can see both the green and white peas -- the white being the ones near the top of the plants that got bleached by the sun through the thin pods. These are going to be stored until January time and then the'll be taken to the canning factory. There a machine with a magic eye will sort them out by colour - the green ones are worth more than the white and will be used as premium grade mushy peas; the white will end up in soup or something similar, The farmer will be paid by the weight of each grade of pea.
The crazy frittilaria and the novelty of the lettuce farming has been a welcome distraction from willing the peas and garlic to grow faster. Last I looked, the peas were tiny sprouts. Now? They're almost as high as a elephant's eye!

My first difficult sock ... Sweet Pea Socks from the Hill Country Yarns Knitalong Sock Club. Took me a while with swatching several times and ripped out the sock entirely. I changed the stitch count and it's worked out much better for my size foot.
New Years Eve 2006: Apparently due to an abalone disease, no abalone, shells, sand, crabs, rocks, water, blah blah blah, may be removed from Port Fairy's south beach, a.k.a. "Pea Soup".
Guess what we caught these guys doing around 9pm...
This pea was the result of bronchoaspiration. On the right you see the complete pea processed for histology. In the photo below on the left you can see the characteristic storage cells of the seeds. Light-colored, lobed starch grains are the most abundant. These cells are practically indistinguishable from one seed to another. What does differentiate one seed from another and could serve to identify them is the coat, which we see in the photo below on the right.
