Beach Pea (Lathyrus japonicus) also called the “Raven’s Canoe” by the Haida people, due to the long fuzzy pea pods. The flowers are a beautiful deep purple or fuschia and are edible, the peas can be eaten fresh or cooked, as can the shoots be consumed like regular peas, but in moderation as excess consumption can cause Lathyrism (though you’d have to eat a significant amount daily for a while to develop this condition.. horses and cattle grazing on this family of plants are more prone to it). A gardener let me into the fenced pea patch area to sketch this delightful little cultivated plot. He told me it belonged to "Dan," who is clearly a lover of flowers and color.
To keep the peas from raining down onto the deck of the float and the people decorating underneath you, peaing is done in teams. There is a smoosher and a catcher. The catcher holds a couple of empty boxes underneath the area where you're working to catch the excess. Then you rotate the boxes as you work until the peas are gone or until the area is covered.
Mammoth Melting Sugar peas from my garden. My 3rd or 4th harvest. Out of two plants, I have gotten an amazing amount of these super sweet peas. They seem the sweetest and best eating when slightly immature. I expect to get a few more harvests out of them, but they are starting to produce less.
Visited London's 'Winter Wonderland' in Hyde Park this evening. Amongst the wintery delights was ice skating, a toboggan slope little crafty type stalls and a ferris wheel. Wow! It could have done with some snow though!
Sweet Pea has gained 41g since I got her. She loves her food and loves her sleep so we have to watch how many treats we give her! I don't want her to become overweight.
We obviously got Peas Pilau.
That's a "sweet & chili naan" I have there.
In fact, my main was entirely made up of new menu items. Tom always said it was good to have a change :}

Three of these fellas turned up in the night and harvested a 'field full' of peas by 7:30am . . . Job Done!
