The Pearl, Newcastle upon Tyne.
Design (late 1960s): T.P. Bennett and Son.
The Pearl stands out as a bold example of Brutalist architecture in Newcastle, creating a striking contrast with the city's other architectural styles:
It towers over nearby Tudor and Georgian buildings, highlighting the city's architectural evolution.
The juxtaposition of The Pearl with historic structures like those on Grey Street showcases Newcastle's architectural diversity.
My fifth species of Butterfly this season. Not the perfect background as they were sitting close to the ground, hope to get some better shots on my next visit to the site.
I shall conclude my photo uploads of 2024 with a series of bird photos around Satara Restcamp.
Unexpectedly, driving by, we initially thought "the brown splotch in the bush" was just another one of the leaf-constructs built by some communal spiders - until suddenly it moved. I hastily put in the breaks and reversed. Using the zoom on my camera, I cheered - for this bird made a new one on my Life List. A beautiful Pearl-spotted Owlet interrupted her daily sleep to lazily eye us, before closing its eyes again, continuing its nap.
Pearl Island is a tiny place, and there aren't thousands, not even hundreds of Atlantic Puffins there. But we did see a few, and this is the best shot of the bunch.
The cruise ship Norwegian Pearl, with its very colourful graphics arrives down from Belfast for its day long visit to Dublin just after 1000 hrs, passed by the Dublin Port pilot.
These “pearls” are water droplets (condensation) on the side of the cup. I used my iPhone 4S along with a macro lens to get this shot.
This is one of the earliest fritillaries to emerge and can be found as early as April in woodland clearings or rough hillsides with bracken.
It flies close to the ground, stopping regularly to feed on spring flowers such as Bugle. It can be distinguished from the Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary by the two large silver 'pearls' and row of seven outer 'pearls' on the underside hind wing, and also the red (as opposed to black) chevrons around the outer pearls and the small central spot on the hind wing.
The butterfly was once very widespread but has declined rapidly in recent decades, and is now highly threatened in England and Wales.
Had a friend bring me into his residence at this iconic building, so I spent half a day photographing the interior. Light did not disappoint; except for the occasional clouds blocking the sun, I had pretty much directional light the whole afternoon and evening.
