Leiden, Maresingel, September 18, 2010. Yellow H.501 Helgoland N006485. Fourth-calendar year Lesser Black-backed Gull, moulting to fourth-winter plumage (fourth cycle, fourth prebasic moult). Two weeks after taking this photo, P6 is now fully grown and P7 is mostly grown. The outer secondary S1 is now fully grown, while S2 and S3 have been shed. The greater coverts are also fully grown and now fully cover the white base of the secondaries (which were still exposed two weeks ago). Moult in the tail is underway as well.

Primary moult score:: 35 (P1=5, P2=5, P3=5, P4=5, P5=5, P6=5, P7=4, P8=1, P9=0, P10=0).

Kleine Mantelmeeuw (Larus fuscus), vierde kalenderjaar

Maresingel, Leiden, 18 september 2010. Geel H.501 Helgoland N006485. Vierde-kalenderjaar Kleine Mantelmeeuw, ruiend naar vierde-winterkleed. Twee weken na het nemen van deze foto is te zien dat P6 nu volgroeid is en P7 bijna volgroeid. De buitenste armpen S1 is volgroeid, terwijl S2 en S3 missen. De grote dekveren zijn nu ook volgroeid, daarbij de witte basis van de armpennen nu bedekkend (deze waren twee weken geleden nog zichtbaar). De rui vindt ook plaats in de staart.

Vuilnisstort, Barneveld, 12 augustus 2011. Blauw DB. Adulte Geelpootmeeuw, ruiend naar winterkleed: P1 t/m P3 zijn nieuw en volgroeid, P4 is bijna volgroeid, P5 mist. Alle grote dekveren missen. Opvallend is het donkere iris.

November 20 fire in Kitchener, approximately 1 pm. P2, 5, A2, R1, 23 dispatched to 399 Queen St South, the old “castle” building for report of smoke coming from the second floor. The building has been abandoned for a number of years and has holes in floors through out the building. Light smoke was showing on arrival, and P3 was added to the call as the RIT team. Firefighters had trouble accessing the different parts of the building. Most of the interior doors were screwed shut to keep vagrants out of the building. The building itself is a total maze inside, making it tough to find the seat of the fire and extension. P2 found fire in the walls on the second floor after searching for nearly 10 minutes. They extinguished the fire and reported they could not find the seat of the fire, suspecting it started in the basement. Crews had to literally unscrew doors with power tools to check each room. They found fire in one room and quickly extinguished it. As fire fighters were able to access more rooms they found extension from basement to third floor. A4 and P1 were added to the call to relieve exhausted firefighters. Eventually they were able to get ahead of the fire and knock down all the hot spots. Fire was declared out approximately 1.5 hours after arrival. The building is slated for the wrecking ball so no damage was available. Photo 125 was taken ten minutes after crews arrived. Smoke conditions outside were light, never saw any visible fire. The fire was called in by Regional Police who were at a meeting across the street. They had witnessed three young males leaving the building about a half hour before the fire.

Adult European Herring Gull, moulting to winter (basic) plumage: P1 to P3 are new and fully grown, P4 is half-grown, P5 1/4 grown and P6 is just growing. P7 has been dropped in the right wing but is still present in the left wing. The outer greater coverts have also been dropped, thereby exposing the white base of the secondaries. The head shows light winter striping.

Nieuwe Rijn, Leiden, 3 september 2011. Groen M.ABB. Adulte Zilvermeeuw ruiend naar winterkleed: P1 t/m P3 is volgroeid, P4 half volgroeid, P5 1/4 volgroeid, P6 komt net door. P7 in rechtervleugel mist, maar is in de linkervleugel nog aanwezig. De buitenste grote dekveren missen waardoor de witte basis van de armpennen zichtbaar zijn. Op de kop is lichte winterstreping zichtbaar.

Intent: I wasn't sure if I should use two horse photos but I love this one. His black coat completely stands out against the background and really just pops out of the picture.

My choice- This photo was taken while experimenting with slow shutter speeds. I was attempting to achieve a "ghost" effect. I set my camera on a tripod and had the girl enter the frame for a short period of time during the slow speed of the shutter.

European Herring Gull (Larus argentatus), 2nd calendar year

Scheveningen, Outer Harbour, The Netherlands, July 27, 2009. Green Y.ADF Arnhem 5416870. Second-calendar year Herring Gull, moulting to second-winter plumage. All scapulars have been moulted to third-generation feathers and are much more dark-centered compared to the previous second-generation feathers that were anchor-patterned. Note also the very dark lower scapulars. The tertials are second-generation and are dark with a white tip. All wing coverts are replaced by second-generation feathers, and have a blocked pattern (some still show a buffish-yellow tinge). P1 to P6 are new and fully grown (the tips of P5 and P6 are just visible), P7 is growing, P8 is missing and P9-10 are juvenile. The bill is starting to show an extensive pink base. The head is light with dark streaks, the breast, underbody and flanks are white with dark barring. The legs are pink. (Compare to this image of the gull in early June.)

Buitenhaven, Scheveningen, 27 juli 2009. Groen Y.ADF Arnhem 5416870. Tweede-kalenderjaar Zilvermeeuw ruiend naar tweede-winterkleed. Alle mantel- en schouderveren zijn geruid naar derde-generatie veren en hebben een veel donkerder centrum dan de vervangen tweede-generatie veren die een ankerpatroon toonden. Merk ook de erg donkere onderste mantelveren op. De tertials zijn tweede-generatie en zijn donker met een witte punt. Alle vleugeldekveren zijn vervangen door tweede-generatie veren en hebben een geblokt patroon (enkele daarvan tonen nog geel-bruinig). P1 t/m P6 zijn vervangen en volgroeid (de punten van P5 en P6 zijn nog net zichtbaar), P7 is groeiende, P8 mist en P9-10 zijn nog juveniel. De snavel begint een uitgebreide roze basis te tonen. De kop is licht met donkere streping, de borst, buik en flanken zijn wit met donkere strepen. De poten zijn roze. (Vergelijk met deze foto van de meeuw begin juni.)

In this photo, I wanted to capture this clump of mushrooms I found in my garden because they seemed to pop out of the dark mulch. Another thing that made these mushrooms stick out was the fact that they were all different shapes and sizes, which I thought was pretty cool.
