What Does Love Look Like

By Darren Wilson

I was nervous the moment I got off the plane.

I was in Recife, Brazil, and I was stepping out as a filmmaker in a way I had never even attempted before. This entire shoot—thousands of dollars spent on flights, crew, hotels, and everything else involved in making a movie—was hinging on whether or not I had heard God correctly.

My big problem at the moment was that I wasn’t sure whether I had or not.

It started when I was trying to figure out the first place I would film for this new film series, and I often sat in my studio and just prayed, trying my best to hear God’s voice.

I called up my good friend, Will Hart, and asked him if he knew of any amazing people around the world I should go film. He rattled off some names and what they did, and then he said, “There’s also an awesome couple named Nic and Rachel Billman. They’re in Brazil, and they have a ministry that reaches out to the homeless and the prostitutes down there.”

Immediately I felt a surge in my spirit, like butterflies in my stomach or a drop from a roller coaster.

I thought, this must be what God wants me to do.

So I hung up the phone and Googled their ministry. As I was clicking around, I heard (or again, I thought I heard) the Lord say, “Have them put on a banquet for the women, and have Nic sing the song that has never been sung before. When he does that, I will pour out my spirit on those women.”

When I emailed Nic, he was excited about me coming down to film, and the dates I had available worked well. This would be one of the first things I would film for these movies, and right off the bat I was putting my ability to hear God to the test for all the world to see.

Couldn’t we just start in the shallow end, Lord?

I mean, I was going to put on film the fact that I heard God give me directions, and if nothing happened, I’d have a very large egg on my face.

So we flew to Brazil. We filmed with Nic and Rachel, and captured some of what they were doing down there, and the entire time I had a knot in my stomach because I knew the last thing we had to do.

I was a nervous wreck.

Earlier, during an interview with Nic, he had mentioned something I found interesting. When talking about the Holy Spirit, he said that one thing he had observed is that the Spirit never usually came the way you expected Him to.

If you were very conservative, often He would make things “a little messy” and maybe make you laugh, shake, or something else not deemed “normal”. If you were expecting fireworks, often he’d come as a whisper.

That night, we had over 20 girls show up straight from the streets, and we gave them a night to remember. Gifts, good food, a total makeover—it was designed to simply let them know that God loves them and believes they have real worth in His eyes.

Then the moment of truth came, and Nic started to play his guitar and sing a song that he was making up on the spot: the song that had never been sung before. My crew stood poised, cameras ready, and I held my breath.

God, were you going to come through for me?

I was expecting fireworks. Lots of weeping, maybe a little wailing, some shaking possibly, who knows, maybe even a demonic manifestation as God’s spirit drove out the darkness in their lives. I was ready for a showdown.

As Nic sang, at first my heart sank because it appeared that nothing was going to happen.

Then, slowly and gently, various women began to silently weep. All around the room, as the women heard the song the Father was singing to them, they had a quiet but profound moment with Him. We filmed it, and it was beautiful.

Afterwards, Nic came up to me and reminded me of what we had talked about earlier regarding the Holy Spirit’s methods. Then he said, “Think about what love is to these women. It’s forceful. Violent. It degrades them. It makes them do things they don’t want to do. But how did the Spirit show them love? He was gentle. Kind. He didn’t overcome or overwhelm them. It was a small act of trust as He attempted to woo them for the first time.”

And for me, it was a major lesson learned.

God is love, and love looks a lot different than many of our best ministry ideas. And the sooner we can partner with His love and not our own agenda, the sooner we can see Him work in amazing, powerful, and beautiful ways.

I can just imagine the storms that this tree on the top of this mountain had to overcome to now stand in all its glory on the top of the hill now. Amazing.

I dedicate this image to anyone facing some trying times at this moment.

Okay, this photo was a lot harder than it looks because it was the first time I've actually gone out here in Stockholm to take photos and I wasn't sure of where to go. This was along a running/walking path and I felt awkward the whole time. So this is about me overcoming that fear of taking self portraits in public, even if it didn't go so great this time around.

Both Link and Jimmy Dean fell victim to the warm sun and fell asleep while watching the sunrise and seeing what was going on out front.

Is it not some bittersweet type of irony, that the girl with the flame hair is so afraid of fire?

It is overwhelming; a heat you can't escape. It clings to your every fibre as if it cannot bear to be apart from you and you let it, until it begins to irritate you and you finally wash it off. It takes your breath away and makes you wrap your arms around your chest and close your eyes, just briefly. It is often welcome. On a winter's night it is the warm hug you long for. It is the way you stretch your toes out and lean them closer to it and you almost count them like a child because it takes them in its hands and warms them up. It is what fills the cold, empty space beside you beneath the sheets each night. It is bittersweet and sometimes it is just bitter but sometimes, like marshmallows, it is just sweet.

And yet it's not just the fire that leaves me breathless. It is not just the fire that I'm afraid of.

- today I went and took photos with Lucy and her little sister Sophie. Then I went back out and happened across the bonfire in the field and I danced in it for awhile and I almost, almost, managed to forget how much I hate fire.

While he was at rest, something strange happened. A sprout began to form at the top of his back and in his time of meditation he became consumed by something of nature. He was in the confines of his home, but it still somehow was able to creep into his pores. The mushroom spore locked into his skin and began to spread throughout his body. His time here was very short as the decomposition process began.

I've been wanting to take this for so long. I'm glad it worked out the way I had hoped (rare occurrence). In saying that, I believe I've just flickr-cursed this picture since the photos I like are not liked on here, and vice versa. Oh well.

I was impressed by the sense of motion in this mural - while he is jumping or perhaps keeping pace with the subway car he is also leaping over a street memorial for someone who has died.

I don't know who this character represents and I was unable to find any information about anyone who had recently died in this area.

Davenport, CA - 2013

Davenport has become one of my favorite places to visit along the coast. Its a funky little spot, and every time I go I end up in some sort of an adventure. This visit was no different. After spending some time in another spot I made my way to the pier. To get to the pier you have to traverse down an extremely steep and loose trail with a shear drop off on one side. I am not a fan of heights and was going to opt out and do something else, my wife had fire in her eyes and in nothing flat down she went. Lets just say down and up is not so easy with a camera bag on your back. I had a few private moments on the climb back up, wondering what indeed would happen if the weed that I was using as leverage to pull me up the face of the trail gave way. It worked out and made for a good story over dinner.

This little tree looks like it wishes it were growing anywhere but here!

I had a dream the other night; this cluster of umbrellas was following me around a grocery store. I ran all the way to the desert and finally accepted them as part of my mind.

Kayla and K’hall landed in the nest chamber spilling over a cart. The noise echoed down the chamber.

K’hall struggled to overcome the disorientation from the jump. “That is an awful feeling. I feel like my insides are scrambled.”

“It would have been worse if we had landed inside this rock wall,” whispered Kayla.

Several reptilians could be seen in the distance checking eggs, but they didn’t seem to be concerned about the racket caused by the overturned cart.

You were not exaggerating the size of their operation. K’hall then spotted an empty eggshell… the creature was hatched, gone. Motioning to Kayla. “We may be too late to destroy them all.”

“I want to place the compressor further down in the center of this large area.” Said K’hall. They each grabbed a handle on the plasma compressor and started dragging the heavy unit down the aisle between the egg tables.

The heat lamps lit the room in a red glow. The temperature was staggering. They had to stop to rest. It was then a siren sounded, and they spotted a large number of reptilians emerging from doors along walls. They were far away but their movement indicated urgency.

“That does not look good.” Said Kayla. “We should hurry.” They grabbed the compressor and hurried on.

Adrienne and Avhal had their compressor in position. They tried to see the others, but they were too far away. They waited for K’hall’s signal.

When the siren sounded dozens of reptilians emerged. They zig-zagged between the egg tables in a urgent way. “They are headed directly for us” whispered Adrienne. “They may have detected when we jumped in here.”

Avhal replied,” Or their sensors may have picked up radiation from the containment field inside the compressor, they may not be able to see us but that might give us away.”

K’hall’s vitec chirped. Avhal’s voice crackled, “We have a situation developing. There are a large number of lizards working their way directly toward us. I believe they have detected the generator.”

“Have them hold position,” said Kayla “They may be able to sense us, but they can’t see or touch us or the units. Let’s move.” She felt Adrienne’s thoughts---terror as if it were her own—the raw panic of being hemmed in on all sides.

Dozens of reptilians soon surrounded where Adrienne and Avhal stood. All were sniffing and tasting the air, waving and jabbering in their language. One approached with an instrument that clearly was homing in on the generator.

Reptilians clogged the aisle ahead of K’hall and Kayla. Kayla whispered “keep going. We can walk right through them. It was obvious dozens of reptilians were starting to surround them.”

Finally, K’hall whispered “this place will work.” Kayla noddled. He spoke into his vitec. “Avhal are you ready?”

By now, over a hundred reptilians crowded the chamber, their scaled bodies pressing in around Arienne and Avhal as they knelt in uneasy silence. One leaned close, nostrils flaring beside Avhal’s ear, its rancid breath curling across his cheek. “More than ready,” Avhal muttered, voice steady despite the stench.

“Pull the grid now” came K’halls voice.

Avhal flipped open the lock and yanked out the safety grids. A warning siren erupted from the plasma generator, followed by the high-pitched whine of a system rapidly slipping into an uncontrolled reaction.

Expecting a fine day with clear skies, I got up early to set up a long exposure star trails photograph. Ten steps out the front door of our apartment block, I looked up, only to see almost complete cloud cover. Oh well, I'm up now so I may as well head down to the lake and see what photographic possibilities present themselves.

The NightCap Pro camera replacement app on my Phone 6s Plus has become my favorite app for taking long exposure photographs over the past few months, supplanting Slow Shutter Cam. This image was the product of using NightCap Pro in "Long Exposure" mode to stack (i.e., average) the many individual frames that were acquired with an exposure length of 1/3 seconds over a total period of 93.93 seconds. This stacking process had 3 obvious benefits when I look at this image - (1) to dramatically reduce the level of high ISO (i.e., an ISO of 5000) random speckle noise, (2) to give the water surface a satin smooth appearance, and (3) to produce a lovely sense of movement for the clouds.

I felt a deep sense of satisfaction to have overcome my initial disappointment at seeing clouds in the sky, for still heading outside, and for coming back with a shot that actually benefitted from the overcast conditions!

i photographed this woman as she was interviewed. she's the manager of a local women's shelter. she spoke boldly about the 18 months she suffered as a victim of

domestic abuse. she seemed pretty unfazed as she spoke in general terms about having to escape for fear of her son's life and her own.

then i noticed a scar on her neck.

she apologized at the end of the interview for not going into more specific details, and then her chin started to quiver and she started crying. she cried because she said talking about the abuse doesn't bother her, but having her new husband hear about it and suffer upsets her.

brave, brave woman.

This view is one I have shot before, but it is significant in that 24 hours earlier the whole area was covered in snow. All of Texas was affected, in fact; and, many people are still suffering from the after-effects of an unusually strong winter storm last week. With temperatures around 12ºC on Saturday, snow still on the ground, the disc golf course was bustling with people who needed to get out, myself included.

It is a dangerous world out there, but we can overcome the dangers if we just overcome that which divides us.

Juvenile yellow mongoose Cynictis penicillata, Rietvlei Dam Nature Reserve.

There were three yellow mongooses and they all took to their heels when they saw our vehicle approaching. However, curiosity overcame apprehension and this youngster turned back, and keeping an eye on us it approached cautiously.

Came across a joke concerning the plural form of this animal's name: A man who once lacked mongooses for his zoo, and not knowing the correct form of the plural, wrote the following letter:

To whom this may concern

I would like to purchase one mongoose from your zoo.

PS Could you send another mongoose with that one!

I haven't been shooting in the daylight recently as I'm working or the weather is gloomy and gray. Now that I'm a Flickr addict, I feel a strong pull to post something other than my SP's each day. Happy Thursday my dear friends!!

Mist about to be overcome with mobile sea foam

Almost midnight. After a few hours of walking the capital, yet more steps awaited. Huffing and puffing enough to scare away the local wildlife, we made it up to Calton Hill.

A windy, cold and occasionally wet evening meant that only us and a couple of other people were up on the hill. Without a torch, it was difficult to see, even with the local light pollution. This made me slightly nervous. I wouldn't walk through my local town park at night because of the crime... yet here I was in a capital city doing just that. Gulp.
