It's not easy to overcome the inertia of driving a car, of transporting yourself from A to B. It's not uncommon for a great photo opportunity to emerge somewhere along the way. Sometimes I have the presence of mind to stop immediately to capture the moment. Other times I hesitate in my thinking while the car hurtles along at a mile a minute, taking me away from the scene. And the farther I go, the more difficult it becomes to turn back. Anyway on this fine day, my reaction to these clouds was immediate. I stopped, grabbed the camera and bounded up to a perfect vantage point. I was taken by the cloud formation and how it seemed to undulate in response to the contours of the earth beneath. Almost as if there was some invisible connection. As I stood here in the brilliant light, looking up the slope, my mind flashed back to me as a young child. In this vision, I was hurtling down a snow covered hill much like this one, riding a tiny aluminum saucer. These saucers were intended expressly for coasting, but in retrospect seemed to put the rider in great peril. There was no steering or braking. One simply hopped on, shoved off, and hoped for the best. Totally thrilling as a child, despite numerous rollovers and encounters with trees and rocks. I wonder if those little saucers are still being manufactured, or if the cost of liability insurance and litigation brought about their demise. Or perhaps lack of interest. I rarely see anyone coasting these days. I think my little saucer epitomized the simpler times of my youth.

The greuling descent of the 2.2% Kicking Horse Pass grade comes to an end at the grade crossing at Field, BC, the crew change at the bottom of the "Big Hill." Train wreathed in brakeshoe smoke, the five SD40-2's are in full dynamic braking and full set on the train air to bring 8700 tons of train to a stop at 815am on August 20, 1982.

An image from the summer, but which has been catching my attention in the folder due to the lovely combination of silver and gold colours.

Taken with the IR/full spectrum converted Nikon D80, Kolari-like QB19/KG3 filter and 18-55 kit zoom (this was before I sorted out a Helios 44M for IR work).

The source files for this image are fairly poor, the kit zoom simply does not focus properly onto the converted sensor and this is as sharp as it gets. Added to that, the D80 does not have very good dynamic range, meaning that colours are either lost in shadow or highlights are blown out. Added to that, the white balance is "away to Gourock" as we say in these parts, meaning "all off to one side", with a magenta cast to the whites.

To overcome these difficulties, there's been a lot of post processing, with highlights repaired with texture from a bracketed shot and lots of selective colour balance work. Not perfect, but there's a limit to how much effort should be put into rescuing a raw file with problems.

The immensity of our Milky Way galaxy always blows me away every time I see it especially in clear dark skies.

This is my Photo-Heart Connection of June. I had not to think very much because the only photos I have taken along the whole month have been a series of these cherries

The day after I finished checking the paper of my students and once I uploaded their marks, I took my camera. Only a few weeks had passed without taking a single photo, even so, it was like a foreign object in my hand that I didn´t know how to handle. I felt sad and tempted to let it aside, but I had the feeling that this could create a breach, a rupture (...)

It is a place symbolizing the deportation of the Jews and other persecuted peoples to concentration or death camps. It is a place for memory and awareness, a multifunctional center for conferences, seminars and exhibitions so that past atrocities will never find refuge in oblivion. Most importantly, it is a venue for dialogue and interchange among cultures, teaching the new generations to overcome linguistic, cultural and social barriers so that the extremes of brutality witnessed in the twentieth century—the Shoah being the absolute nadir of human barbarity—can never happen again.

“In Jewish tradition, the command to remember is absolute. But its obligation does not end with the cognitive act of memory—it must be connected to both meaning and action. Today, we for whom the memory is burned in our hearts and on our flesh gather to pass the torch of memory to the next generation. We pass to you, as well, the fundamental lesson of Judaism: that memory must be accompanied by action of ethical and moral intent. This must be the foundation and the focus of your energies toward the creation of a better world.” (Yad Vashem)

(Yad Vashem)

HAPPY DIWALI TO ALL MY FRIENDS WHO CELEBRATE.

I like this picture for the beautiful play of light and shadow on the mountains. Especially the light between the silhouted trees in the foreground and the monastry.
