On January 1st of every year, new heritage works enter the public domain. Unfortunately, these works often remain inaccessible to the public.
In order to share experiences and best practices in opening up this material, Meemoo, COMMUNIA, Creative Commons, Wikimedia Europe, Wikimedia Belgium, the Royal Library of Belgium and Europeana co-organised the annual Public Domain Day on 9 January 2025 in Brussels.
This event highlighted inspiring developments and European use cases and examined the legal, financial, technical and institutional barriers that prevent the public access to this works. Discussions focussed on strategies to overcome these obstacles, ensuring that public domain content can truly benefit everyone.

This is the only place in the world where you are able to walk through the heart of a colony of nesting Mute Swans. A visit to the Swannery is considered one of the best things to do in Dorset.
Nesting mute swans are usually intensely territorial, so it is unusual to see this many pairs in proximity to each other. However, the closeness of the nests can sometimes lead to problems as newly hatched cygnets can become attached to the wrong parent bird; to overcome this rearing pens are used for a few selected families who need more privacy. Visitors are sometimes allowed to hold the cygnets under supervision from the swanherds. The daily feeding sessions take place at noon and 4 p.m. and are interesting to witness as a large mass of the birds gather round, children are invited to help with the feeding.
