The rebuilt F40PH-3 currently assigned to the BNSF line was pulling out of Western Springs on a nice sunny afternoon.
The new paint is looking good; anything different around here is noteworthy.
Inbound and outbound bottle trains meet at Lakefront Yard each with a former Mittal SW1500. East Chicago, IN
Metra 167 pulls an outbound Metra out of the Arlington Park station and past the old CNW Intermediate signals on the UP Northwest Line.
I honestly think I prefer the motion blur shot of inbound train 1410 I shared prior, but just for comparison here is Keolis/MBTA outbound train 1409 to Wachusett about to cross King Street on Main 1 at MP 31.5 on the Fitchburg Route Mainline led by F40PH-3C 1035. This historic crossing watchman's shanty is well cared for here beside the circa 1879 Fitchburg Railroad station that is still standing just out of sight to the right. Painted in traditional Boston and Maine colors just like the shanty the depot has long been in private hands and non railroad use and modern day commuter trains stop at a new station a bit over a mile to the east.
Also, note the nice ripe plums on the tree at right....they sure look delicious don't they?!
Shhhh....they were! ;)

BN E9's 9917 1nd 9913 head out of Union Station while other trains are going through the wash and into the yard. From Taylor St. May 1991.
CSX Q02007 came howling through Erie, PA on this day, hustling intermodal containers from Chicago to Worcester, MA. Leading the train is one of the first-generation ET44AH locomotives CSX purchased. Tier 4 GEVO No. 3357 is passing the tracks it probably sat on two years ago after being completed at General Electric's Erie Locomotive Works.
On this day the outbound tracks from the plant have some of the newest GEVOs to roll out of Erie: nine ES43ACi's for the Pakistan Railway. Their type GEU-40, these are the third batch of GEVOs for Pakistan to be shipped out. CSX would pick them up later that afternoon and run them west over the border to Ohio, where they will be interchanged with Norfolk Southern. NS will eventually run them through Harrisburg on their way to the Port of Norfolk.
Svitzer Marines tug Svitzer Surrey outbound from Glasgow, passing Greenock for Belfast after assisting on a job in Glasgow
Metra F40PH #105 and F40PHM-2 #193 sit at the platform at Union Station with commuter trains that would head out on BNSF'S "racetrack" later that afternoon.
Conrail Shared Assets BA-3 hitches up to the outbound loaded scrap cars at Sims Metal Management (Hugo) in Jersey City, NJ with a pair of CSX locomotives.
A billboard announces the coming Lincoln Yards redevelopment project (which will include a new, relocated Clybourn station) as two outbound Metra Union Pacific trains- one on the North Line, the other on the Northwest Line, arrive at their respective platforms at Clybourn Junction. To the right, the last C&NW searchlights in Chicago protect the meeting of the Kenosha and Harvard subdivisions.
Three units have the morning ore train under way departing ASARCO's Ray Mine whose tailings piles can be seen in the distance. The end of track at the mine load out is about three miles behind the train and the junction with the mainline is about 2 miles ahead. The train is approaching the Hwy 177 crossing at the first place the train becomes visible after leaving ASARCO property. I was drawn to the stylized sun and railroad initials adorning the gate here at the edge of the property line.
The Copper Basin has operated the 54 mile long Magma - Winkelman former Southern Pacific branchline since 1986. That year the SP sold the line to Kennecott Copper which immediately turned around and sold it along with their 7 mile private mine haul railroad from Ray mine to Ray Jct. and their branch from Hayden Jct. up to the Hayden smelter to create the CBRY. Later that same year Kennecott turned around and sold their Ray mine and all Hayden operations to ASARCO, operator of the original 1912 smelter in Hayden. Independent for its first 20 yrs, the CBRY was purchased by ASARCO (virtually its sole reason for existence now) in 2006.
Leading the train is GP39-2 501 that was built new for Kennecott Copper in Oct 1978 as #791 with a high cab and raised fuel tank for visibility and clearance in the Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah. Trailing GP40 302 was built as L&N 3012 in Oct 1967.
Mining has been conducted in the Ray area since 1883 and the present open pit mine dates from 1952. With proven copper reserves lasting until 2044 the CBRY should be in business for many more years. June of 73 finds four Santa Fe F's leading an outbound passenger train at Roosevelt Road in Chicago.
Rush-hour traffic on the Kennedy Expressway (in "Hubbard's Cave"), and a Metra Milwaukee District train, hustle out of the city on a chilly evening.
Iowa Pacific's Indianapolis-bound Hooiser State passenger train works it's way up to speed as it departs Union Station in Chicago. We didn't exactly get lucky with the power today, but I suppose one day I'll look back and wish I'd shot this "ugly" gray locomotive more.
A Metra flies west through LaVernge Station on BNSF's Chicago Subdivision. Overhead, a freight train waits.
This was the northbound lineup of trains out of Queen's Gate yard in Cincinnati on the afternoon of 8-8-16.
Metrolink 660 is the next train east through Commerce. The F125s got off to a horrible start on Metrolink and took years to get their issues worked out. Now they're at least reliable enough to go solo on the road, and most of the prior F59s have been retired as a result.
A scene that replayed over and over for years, the Lake State Railway's train to Bay City prepares to depart the railroad's northern terminus of Alpena with outbound loads of cement from LaFarge. Handsome C425 1280, rebuilt in 1999-2000 to AC traction, provides the power. By early 2010, the once proud fleet of 244 and 251 power had been reduced to only a handful of worn classics. 1280 would become the last, hanging on by a thread until July of 2011 until it too was sidelined and scrapped.
The first of many batches of cameras on their way out of my collection. The "pedestrian" stuff goes first. Am moving to a new home next year and decided to cull the herd - and cull it hard. Difficult to do when you've spent 30-years accumulating the stuff and love all of it. Still, my kids do not have an interest in it when I'm gone, so it's time to release them back into the wild now. Got another couple hundred to go to get down to the priceless few I'll put on new shelves.
