Keolis/MBTA outbound train 405 for Wachusett pulls in to its stop at Concord on Main 1 of the Fitchburg line at MP 20.1 in this telephoto view from west of the Belknap St. crossing. Rebuilt F40PH-3C 1062 was once one of two MassDOT blue units wearing a unique 'fish bones' scheme.

The heavily modified station building now serves as retail space and offices but dates from 1890 as the third station on the site which has had continued uninterrupted passenger service since the Fitchburg Railroad arrived in town in 1844 during the days of Henry David Thoreau.

The last rays of sun are beginning to set as an outbound NJT train swings around the curve at Harrison. I think this would be the 3873 to Trenton.

South Shore Line train 217, a "Gary Local", hums through the snow behind the Art Institute of Chicago, a few minutes out of Millennium / Randolph St Station. It's already slowing for its first outbound stop at Van Buren Street. Gary Metro Center will be reached in about an hour.

Keolis/MBTA train 1407 outbound from North Station to Wachusett accelerates away from its station stop westbound on Main 1 of CSXT's ex Pan Am Southern Freight Main. This is about MP 316.5 (measured from Waterville) and also 36.5 as measured from Boston via the Keolis Fitchburg Route mainline. I promised a friend I'd take him here to shoot BO-1 sometime but with freight operations winding down as the last customer, Rousselot in Peabody, closes we were running out of chances. But with their loco pointed north and one final load to deliver we knew this Tuesday would be the the second to last train so I stayed up late after work and met him in Lynn and took him down here. We ended up having a bit of a wait and lensed six purple window trains opportunistically while we hung out.

The first one is outbound MBTA/Keolis train 105 from North Station to Rockport led by GP40MC 1127 as it crosses over the Saugus Draw at MP 9.5 on the MBTA (ex Boston and Maine) Eastern Route mainline and enters the city of Lynn from Saugus.

The 487 ft long double track bridge dates from 1911 and has a 65 ft movable span. According to the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) it is a single-leaf Strauss overhead counterweight bascule which is believed to be the oldest known example of its type in Massachusetts. It is particularly significant for its innovative engineering design and association with a prominent bridge engineer, Joseph Baermann Strauss, whose company designed the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

Alas like so much other legacy Boston and Maine infrastructure, this bridge has reached the end of its useful life and a replacement is in the works as described here: archives.lib.state.ma.us/bitstream/handle/2452/799579/ocn...

Rock Island E9 662 leads an outbound Suburban train at Roosevelt Road. Fans are gathering to watch Southern 2-8-2 4501 depart with fantrip on the Rock in June 1973. Today the 662 would have a large crowd gather for her. The large Pennsy freight house can be seen at the left.

At the time of the shot Q135 (now I135) rolls past the curve in Franconia about 10 miles south of DC.

I never go out specifically to shoot purple window trains but if one comes by while waiting for my main target I'll raise my camera for a shot. And that was exactly the case here while waiting for Providence and Worcester local PR-3 with the unit ethanol train to come down track 7 I lensed Keolis/MBTA outbound train 813 for Providence passing the Amtrak MOW Base located in the remains of the once vast New Haven Railroad Northrup Avenue hump yard. MPI HSP46 2033 is scooting down Main 1 at about MP 187.8 of Amtrak's New Haven Line main (the NEC) just about to the Providence city line that I'm practically standing on.

At sunset, Metra 172, delivered in 1983 and as yet un-rebuilt, leads outbound UP West Line train 63 under the C&NW signal bridge at Central Avenue in Chicago's west-side Austin neighborhood. CTA's Green Line is to the right. This batch of F40PHs replaced C&NW E-units, and have now been in service longer than their predecessors!

With the train built and staged at Norton St just outside Owosso, the outbound crew is on board and ready to start working south with the Owosso South Turn. Its first stop will be at Durand, less than 10 miles away.

GLC 383 still wears Montana Rail Link blue from its previous stint as MRL 705. The locomotive was built as NW 1553 in 1965 with a high nose. MRL acquired it in the late 80's and rebuilt it with a chopped short hood. GLC then purchased the unit from MRL in 2020.

Outbound Keolis/MBTA train 5215 from North Station is eastbound on Main 2 of the Western Route mainline passing through CP AS at MP 25.6. F40PH-3C 1028 is approaching the Andover Street crossing as it passes the remains of the one bustling Boston and Maine freight yard which still remains in use as by new owner CSXT as a base for a few locals.

At left providing a backdrop is another ubiquitous brick mill building. This particular one dates from 1900 and was once home to the Monomac Spinning Company, producers worsted yarns for weaving and knitting. Today it is known as Heritage Place and has been beautifully restored as residential and office space.

Photo title: Outbound, yet limited

The Lake Shore Limited with sleepy passengers heads out of town, on time, as it passes under Roosevelt Road in Chicago, IL on a pleasant summer evening. I had never been here before and brought my strobes to try to light this up. As it turns out, the LED lights from the AMTRAK yard off to the right required nothing of the sort. And thanks to a f/2.8 lens, (thanks for showing me how good those are, Davis Shroomberg!), I was able to get the shot with ambient light.
