Losing a limb in a landmine accident also means losing the ability to work and support yourself and your family. There are around 43,000 landmine survivors in Cambodia. Many have no option but to beg on the streets for survival.
The Cambodia Trust offers a helping hand out of poverty by providing landmine survivors with prosthetic limbs and support so they can gain new skills and find employment.

MEDICARE: CMS Should Take Actions to Continue Prior Authorization Efforts to Reduce Spending
a) The home health services demonstration was scheduled to run through July 2019, but the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) paused the demonstration in April 2017. As of February 2018, the demonstration had not resumed.
b) There is no set end date for requiring prior authorization for these durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics and supplies (DMEPOS) items. CMS may suspend prior authorization for these items at any time.
Jade was quite fond of the toy duck which she used to help Clark with during his visit. Seems it quacks out a song.
Xavier has developed a flat spot on the back of his head that progressively got more noticeable. After his six month visit, we we referred to Monroe Technologies for potential cranial remolding treatment. We had a consultation & turns out he was a candidate for a helmet that will give his skull a chance to round out. This condition is much more common now that every baby is supposed to sleep on their backs to help prevent SIDS. Xavier is a great sleeper & don't roll over just, keeps on lying on his back. That & all the time in the car seat, another flat, relatively hard surface for his skull to rest on. We agreed to the treatment & thankfully it was covered under insurance but we we going to treat him no matter what. This treatment will last two to six months depending on how he responds to the helmet. We figured what ever social embarrassment we have to put up with during this time is instantly out weighed by a lifetime of not having hats fit right or getting teased about a funny looking head. We are sharing the documentation of this experience for everyone to see what it like. The marvels of modern medical science...

Sessions-Thursday, October 8, 2015. Outcomes Symposium (C5)
Room 103 B (Convention Center Street Level)
(The following sessions run consecutively within this program.)
Concurrent Validity of the Dartfish Express iPad Application for Gait Analysis (C5A)
Lee Childers, PhD, MSPO, CP
The introduction of “smart” devices with integrated cameras (e.g. iPad and iPhone) and the development of application software specific to motion capture (Dartfish Express) have enabled these devices to potentially provide a method to measure improvements in gait due to O&P intervention. The purpose of this research was to address the validity of these devices.
Suitability of Step-by-step Variability as an Outcome Variable for Lower Limb Prosthesis Alignment (C5B)
Goeran Fiedler, PhD
This exploratory study investigates multiple gait variables and whether step-by-step variance is related to prosthesis alignment quality. Such a relationship was shown for peak horizontal forces, but not for torsion moments or step duration.
Comparative Analysis of Quality of Life Approaches in P&O (C5C)
Keith Frost, CPO
Michael Wininger, PhD
There are many quality of life (QoL) instruments designed with specific application and without. Are these instruments meeting our needs as clinicians, and how can we choose between them? We use cutting-edge network analysis to better understand the available QoL tools.
A Multimedia Outcome Measures Resource for the Orthotic and Prosthetic Clinician (C5D)
Jason Kahle, MSMS, CPO, FAAOP
Tyler Klenow, MSOP, CPT
The development of a multimedia resource of functional outcome measures for orthotists and prosthetists will be presented along with how to implement this resource into clinical practice. The resource includes high-definition videos and corresponding summaries along with necessary resources and administration protocols for six popular outcome measures.
Observational Gait Scores as Outcome Measures in Orthotics and Prosthetics (C5E)
Cara Negri, CP
The visual diagnosis of a patient’s gait in real time is subjective, lacks accuracy and relies on the clinician’s training and experience. Using a systematic approach to gait analysis has been shown to be a reliable tool that can detect changes in intervention. The Edinburgh Visual Gait Score and the Prosthetic Observational Gait Score can be used as outcome measures in O&P.
Validity of the Modus Index, Daily Steps, Amputee Mobility Predictor with Prosthesis, and Six-Minute Walk Test in Estimating Functional Classification Level (K-level) of Lower Limb Amputees (C5F)
Robert Engelen, DO
This study developed a novel method of classifying lower limb amputees into the Medicare Functional Classification Levels using location of walking, daily steps, fastest 1 minute of walking, and clinical knowledge of the patient. This Reference K-level was used to assess the accuracy of four objective, clinically feasible methods in estimating K-level: Modus Trex functional algorithm, daily steps, amputee mobility predictor with prosthesis, and six-minute walk tests.
